A CD Review of "5PM" from Nick at The Charleston Gazetteâ¦â¦.

YOU'LL LIKE IT IF: You like well written songs w/catchy melodies, blasting guitars, and a dash of turntablism.

Well, the first band to ship a CD for review was Professor Mike, way back in 2005. Now, they're back with an 8-song release that features the same catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, fat riffage, and yeah, more turntables. 2004's "Far Away" showed that singer-guitarist Chad Fallecker writes catchy songs, and the band pulled together for some powerful songs on their debut effort, but it had nowhere near the power and overall quality this CD does.

"Tomorrow's Sun" starts the CD off with an extended intro, then sets to rockin'. Fallecker and Sean Sydner lay down the riffage, bassist Joey Johnson and drummer Casey Ware provide the drive, and DJ Honeycomb fills things in on the wheels of steel. Everything seems to be right in place for these guys right from the start.

"Footprints" shows Fallecker and crew's lighter side with dreamy verses and power choruses. "...My soul has lost its wings...", Fallecker is heard to pine repeatedly. I feel that. This song could be a hit, no doubt.

"Changing Lanes" is straight up punk. Cool stabs by Honeycomb, nice vocal harmonics, crashing cymbals, and that driving, 1/4-note snare in the verses set my head to shakin'. Fallecker sings "...All I got is all I need today...got money to burn, and gas in the tank/let's see where nowhere leads today..." Perfect.

"Yesterday" closes the CD with a bit of an acoustic mea culpa for Fallecker, dedicated to "someone who loved you." On the chorus, Fallecker sings "...Take me back someday, maybe yesterday, cause I can't find my way, The life I've carried on since I met you.... "

Professor Mike is what I would have called power-pop: the songs are not that intricate, but they're catchy and powerful enuff for you not to have to call their sexual persuasion into question.

For me, what sets them apart are Fallecker's personal lyrics, which run a range of emotions (not just anger) and DJ Honeycomb, of course. The band seems to be finding its voice more and more. That voice is spanning several genres smoothly.

ââ¦â¦â¦ Iâm not going to try and categorize these guys. I donât think it would be fairâ¦..Professor Mike shows how their recipe of mixing different music styles results in a yummy meal for the rock fanâs palletteâ¦â¦.â
