Do you know what it feels like to get punched in the stomach and kissed on the cheek at the same time? Probably not, but PONTIUS will get you closer. Domiciled in Chicago, and owing much of their influence to the variety of music offered by the Midwest, PONTIUS is part pop, a little more rock, but mostly honest and solid song writing. Singer ETHAN BUHR and guitarist PHIL ROSENGREN played together in Minnesota, but split only to independently move to Chicago a few years later. While Phil earned extra money rummaging through Jeff Tweedyâs trash and selling the parcels on eBay, Ethan was hard at work writing new material. The two connected again and immediately decided to start the new project. They found bassist MIKE MATTICK at a Joliet casino talking about the band he used to play with. The trio then courted drummer MIKE BURMEISTER for months before he conceded to meet them in their Garfield Park warehouse for an audition. They instantly recognized something good was happening. With renewed ambition, they immersed themselves in writing new material. Mixing rough Chicago chunk (members of Solid Brass Butch, Wholly Hindu Exit Ramp, and Cordial) with Minnesota underground (members of Four Parts Per Million), PONTIUS produces a surprisingly cohesive and infectious sound. Culling the melodic elements of Built to Spill, rock grit of GNR, and the unpredictability of Monks of Doom, PONTIUS is as comfortable delivering structural twists as they are pop simplicity. They offer a brand of rock that you haven't heard before, yet itâs somehow familiar. From the blistering crack of a rim-shot and the growl of an angry Les Paul, to sweet volume swells and the call of a lonely Viking, each song brings a new texture to their set.
