Legendary Philly/Baltimore underground avant-power trio, Powerlunch, returns to deliver 8 new densly grooving, sprawling, and explosive compositions of sonic delight. Prepare to have your scrotum boggled. YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR EARS.
8 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Math Rock, JAZZ: Free Jazz
Details:
Powerlunch is a Baltimore/Philadelphia based instrumental "power trio" (i.e. the classic late 20th century configuration of guitar, bass, and drums), that specializes in the juxtaposition, combination, permutation, and complete obliteration of the dichotomy between intricately composed material and various improvisational strategies, as well as such small-minded, obsolete, and out-dated musical/artistic concepts such as 'stylistic purity' and stupid vs. clever (as we all know, there's a fine line that exists between the two).
Powerlunch is a band that is without care for the politics of genre. What does all this mean? Basically, we are valiently attempting to succeed at the insurmountable task of failure. Consequently, almost all of the music will never sound the same twice, even though each composition still retains it's own individual stamp, form, and direction.
One could call this a process of 'living in the moment', and/or 'learning to deal with memory deprivation'. We hope most that our music can be prismatic...open and susceptible to any and all influences.
Emphasis is placed on organic real-time structural/timbral development, which is achieved through the various uses of live electronics, in combination with a personal vocabulary of various 'extended instrumental techiniques.' As a result, the overall sonic spectrum is quite large and extremely unpredictable, especially for a basic power trio.
Imagine, if you will, a couple of disenchanted 'jazz' and 'classical' musicians hidden under the guise of an 'electro-hardcore metal' band, who are then, once again, posing as 'jazz' musicians...and there you have it ladies and gentlemen...a densly grooving, noisey, and sparkling sonic equivalent for the racial identity crisis of Michael Jackson! Dig it!
Powerlunch generally consists of the following members:
Matt Frazao: Guitar & Electronics, left ventricle
Devin Gray: Drums & Percussion, spinal fluid
Evan Lipson: Bass, vas deference
some shameless name-dropping: Members of Powerlunch perform and/or record regularly with various artists, including: Yoshida Tatsuya (RUINS), Michael Formanek, Gary Thomas, George Garzone, Dave Ballou, Mat Maneri, Tony Malaby, John O'Gallager, Lukas Ligeti, Andrew D'Angelo, Jack Wright, John McClellan, Mike Pride, Nate Wooley, Vardan Ovsepian, John Herbert, Mike Gamble, Charlie Looker, Toshi Makihara, Charles Cohen, Rick Iannacone, Elliott Levin, and Helena Espvall-Santoleri.
