pointillist plays dreamy noir instrumental music building larger songs from smaller structures
7 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Instrumental Rock, ROCK: Progressive Rock
Details:
Pointillist is a collaboration between Andy White and Guy D'Annolfo. True to their namesake, the songs attempt to employ specific refrains and phrases to be pointed out for their unique tone and color, while revealing the portrait of a comprehensive vision, via the song structure.
Andy and Guy met while playing for the Boston band Garrison. Both left to pursue their graduate degrees (Andy in Clinical Psychology, Guy in English Literature). This first official self-titled release was recorded at home by Andy on his analog 8-track machine, with each person adding their parts at separate times. Working in this manner, they continue to write and produce music while also balancing jobs and graduate studies. It's no wonder that equilibrium is a central concept when writing songs, whether that balance is between space and density, harmony and dissonance, or whispering and shouting. Minimalism is also maintained in the songs by allowing the instruments to naturally project and fade, as if in suspiration. Andy maintains this starkness during the recording process by sticking to essential ideas, not cluttering the songs with too many tracks.
The music on the first release has been compared to "post-rock" bands such as Tortoise, A Minor Forest, the Sonora Pine, and Seam. Artwork on the first 500 CDs and packages was created by Dawn Salgado and Andy White, with each package being two-color hand silkscreened.
Pointillist has been features on NPR's "Open Mic", viewable here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5454832
Pointillist is current working on new songs, as well as collaborating with visual artists and planning a series of live shows.
