I was born in Santa Barbara California; a few miles from Butterfly Beach. Playing the piano became one of my passions when at 4 years old I began talking Classical piano lessons.
Life has been pretty wonderful so far! Iâve had many triumphs as well as my share of difficult lessons. Pouring my heart out onto the piano keys has been a lifeline for me.
This CD has been years (decades) in the making! I am finally ready to share this music, which is a little piece of my soul with you. My desire is that you not only enjoy it, but that it touches your heart in some way. Share your thoughts at www.cynthialuanne.com

Cynthia Luanneâs personal notes on the pieces/ songs
(My piano teacher Carolyn Nordquist used to say âYou sing a song, and you play a piece.â)
After the title of the song is a little something about its significance in the âjourneyâ of this CD â the order of the song. Then following that is a little more about the meaning or circumstances around the composition of the piece/song; with personal notes.
1. The Children are Gone â The moment in the journey when we realize something terrible has happened and is seems our lives will never be the same. This is written in C Sharp minor (my signature key). I was very upset when I wrote this. It represents deep sorrow, distress and sense of loss.
2. Exquisite â The pain of the realization. Named âexquisiteâ relating to exquisitely painful; I used to weep when I played this. âWill I ever feel loved or truly happy again?â
3. Titanic - shipwrecked, unforeseen ruin, loss, abandonment, death,
Inspired by the movie, written while rewinding the first half of the rented VHS tape (yes, VHS). Have you ever felt like your life was shipwrecked? I was especially touched by the scene in the movie when the mother and baby were floating in the water â so SAD! This song has an ethereal quality to it; almost like the angels are there waiting to usher the souls to their next place and sad to see the pain they went through in death. There is a resolution, an acceptance of death.
4. Waiting: How long will I be floating in this water? Is someone going to rescue me? Will I have the strength to rescue myself? Where is my Heavenly Father? Where is my Knight in Shining Armor? Do they even exist? Why do I have to wait for the answers to my questions? This is a difficult lesson for sure. I felt like I was in limbo, not quite sure what was next or if I had any strength to get there. I donât like to wait. (Who does?) I like to play FAST and playing this song is an exercise in patience for me. When my children were younger Iâd ask them what the name of this song is and they would reply âslooooowâ. This is one of the most âpowerfulâ pieces in my repertoire; in my opinion. I played this during an offertory at my church on San Juan Island and a visiting pastor told me afterwards that he had never been more aware of Godâs presence than during that song â Wow!
5. The Electricity Song â Life is returning! This is the part of the journey where we see that there is a possibility of something good after all; there is much more ahead. Written one weekday morning when a storm knocked out the electricity on San Juan Island, and it was too quiet. I sat down to the piano to play something for everyone to get ready for the day too. This one is fun to play!
6. Released: named for being released from that which holds us back. We let go of all the old things that no longer serve us, that which binds us and holds us hostage; including old hurts, resentments, bitterness, unforgiveness, old habits and attitudes. We are released from the bondage of disempowering thinking and beliefs that limit us. This was the first happy piece that I wrote in several years. (You can hear the birds singing in the background.)
7. Crest of a Wave: movement, excitement, sheer joy of living! Crest of a Wave is the literal definition of Jennifer; the most exciting part of the wave. This is about my daughter Jennifer. Her laughter is in the background. Her laugher has always been one of my favorite sounds. She epitomizes the meaning of her name; beautiful, graceful, strength in action, joyful, effective, confident, the most exciting part of the ocean (itâs no wonder that surfers have focused on being inside the wave just under the crest).
8. Time âthis is the lesson of paying attention to what is happening right NOW, instead of rushing ahead to the future, or living in the past. The Lesson of âBeing Presentâ! This is what happens when a meter challenged musician (me) submits to playing to a click track. Victor Gulley told me when he first heard my music, that he would record me, but only if Iâd let him put me on a click track (so other musicians could more easily accompany me). I took 15 years of classical piano lessons; many years of Bach Inventions and the like where my teacher Carolyn Nordquist would have me practice to a metronome. We then went to the more romantic pieces of Chopin and Debussy where there was âphrasingâ and emoting; allowing liberty with the meter. Well, that is where I stopped with my lessons, but my liberty with the meter just kept going and it sort of went off the deep end (so to speak). I decided to put lyrics to this one. Years ago my handwriting was analyzed and it showed that I live in the past and yearn for the future. (Iâm changing my handwriting!)
Time

9. Romp: Bringing fun play and ease to life! This is all about having fun and playing (and doing other things adults do) outside. I could see fields of grass and wildflowers and sunshine when I wrote this.
10. Yoke: this is all about partnering with power, experience and wisdom. We do well to partner with others. Partnership is a great place to be. Yoke is the literal definition of the name Rebecca. (Yoke, as in yoking up oxen, not the center of an egg.) The yoke gives us access to power, partnership, and mentoring. Oxen used to be teamed up with a much more experienced and much stronger animal that would show the young one how to do the work. The yoke made it easy, especially if it was custom made. You wanted one that fit well so it wonât chaff. One of my favorite bible verses has always been Matthew 11:29 âCome unto me all ye who are weak and heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble at heart and you will find rest for your souls.â This verse was on my mind constantly when I wrote this song. This is about my daughter Rebecca. Rebecca is powerful, wise, beautiful, talented, kind and experienced. Among many other things, she connects people with power and is an access to strength and ease for others.
11. Walk on the Beach: enjoying life in all its beauty, dynamics, drama and peace. This is song about ease and peace. I wrote this in the key of D for David. Not my son, David but another dear friend David Hayes who is a brilliant saxophone player and loves walking on the beaches of San Diego and Laguna Beach.
12. Morning Shower Mantra. This was included as something extra. I wasnât going to include it as a separate track, but then it wouldnât be able to have a name or be downloaded (some may want to do that). This is something I wanted to share and I realize it may seem a little off-the-wall to many. I recorded this with my digital recorder. It is of me taking a shower and singing what I sing everyday in my shower. âI love my life!â What do you like about your life? What do you love about your life? May all the things you love about your life increase.
