A BIOGRAPHY
Chris Steven, although in the prime of life today, has lived a long and story filled independent musical career. Reminiscing with his father, he is told of a story of when at the tender age of 3, upon discovering his father's guitar in the house, he would bang on and dance around his dad's guitar case until his father would open it up and let Chris stare at the guitar in awe. "He said that I would try to play it, run around, stare at it, but as soon as that case would close, apparently I became a gigantic pain in the ass!"
Could there be such a thing as fate one asks......
Chris got his first guitar at the age of 5, and he swears that never looked back. "I remember my father showing me a blues shuffle in E, as well as some basic chords. I began to write music at a very early age, and used to dream and obsess about singing and playing guitar on stage for lots of people. I didn't know it was something I would actually do in life."
Chris starting to find other musicians in high school, mostly older, including his older brother Dave on the drums to play in a group. "I remember hanging out with this guy Jimmy at school. He was tall and lanky with a huge nose, and totally reminded me of Pete Townsend. He was in grade 13 and I was in grade 9. We went back to his house one day because he had told me he played guitar too, and in his room the guy had like 8 Les Pauls!! He asked me if I wanted to buy one. I was completely freaked out. I wanted the Gold Top (Randy Rhoads model), but he wouldn't let it go. He had a 1979 Cherry Sunburst Standard, which I didn't think was as cool, but it still was a Les Paul, and I ended up buying it from him for only $500! My dad sprung for the cash. My first Les Paul. That was a very surreal day."
Band after band, musician after musician, Chris was 17 and in deep. "I remember rushing through an exam because the guys were in the parking lot waiting for me to go and do a gig in Niagara Falls. It was our first Headlining Backender (Thurs,Fri,Sat) that we ever had, and I wasn't going to be late."
It's no mystery that it took 7 years for Chris to finally graduate. After being expelled for fighting with an English teacher, and quitting again a second time to play music at a higher level, school proved a definite struggle for Chris. " I was the angriest son of a bitch that I ever knew back then. I was deeply questioning the makings of authority and an insecure society in those days. Hell, I still do question it."
Chris sang lead vocals in the 1980's Toronto indie glam band known as Trash Cinema. The band was known to dawn the craziest hair and wear the most outrageous stage clothing, along with full eye liner, lipstick and baby powder, and looked like a combo between the New York Dolls and early Motley Crue. Trash Cinema played around the Toronto scene at such venues as The Gasworks, Hot Rocks, Nags Head North to name a few. "I remember having to get a note from my folks permitting me to play, because I was still underage. Our posters were all over downtown Toronto, with the slogan - Sex and Violence Tour. We weren't a very good band, but we drew volumes of people to our shows because of our insane antics."
The next indie Band that Chris would form was named The Atomic Opera. The band released a 5 song EP titled "Cheap Wine & Good Philosophy", and is still floating around out there in the Musical Universe today. From Toronto's well known clubs such as LEE's Palace, The Opera House, The (Original) Elmo Combo the Atomic Opera did generate a strong following on the Toronto scene during the bands lifetime. "I remember we played the Opera House one night, and it was a packed house. After the show, an agent came up and asked me if we would open up for any bands. I got infuriated and told her to f****** and said that we were strictly a Headliner. I still definitely needed to make a few attitude adjustments back then...."
The Atomic Opera lived it's cycle and eventually transformed into another group that Chris called "The Me Generation". This indie band experienced a very successful run, including playing some large venues in Europe. The band put out a Release titled "Diamond Soldier" and a second 3 song Release produced by The Cult's ex-basist Jamie Stuart. "The Me Generation was a lot of fun. We had a great run as a band and gained a lot of live experience. I still stay in touch with all the guys."
Upon exiting the Me Generation, Chris formed a new band called The Cronics. This 3 piece band has been featured on Breakfast Television, Rogers Local TV, and OMNI channels Night Life. The Cronics released a 6 song EP titled "Things Your Cat Can't Swallow, and shot a video for the CD single Mr. Wonderful. The Cronics are still performing live, and intend to release some more original work in the near future.
Chris Steven has now released 3 solo CDs in just 18 months, with his 1st solo release, titled âMemoirs Of An Axemanâ his 2nd release titled âLil' Rock n' Roll Recordâ and a third and new release titled "Volume III". All 3 albums help to define the true sense of what a solo recording is, with each instrument, backup vocal, drum beat and guitar was written, recorded and produced by Chris himself. "Learning to do everything has taken a long time, although I am still very interested in collaborating and doing things live off the floor, I just found this time around that I wanted the challenge of putting it all together solo. I was kind of inspired by live DJs actually, except what you're hearing is organic, and manually performed, not sampled. I am very happy that all the late nights amounted to this. It's getting great feedback, and I may just do it a whole bunch more. Maybe like a book writer, in a series.
Chris is now currently supporting his work live under The Chris Steven Band.
