I fused my three musical loves, late 80's gothic alternative music, early 90's grunge, with early 90's techno rave music. All recorded in 2010, with the motivation of using music and the music-making process, towards aiding in my recovery from my former life crashing and burning. Thus the name of the album, "Resurrection of the Phoenix."

I thought it would be so amazing to take these songs which represent the emotions, struggles, and victories of the past year and turn it into an album others might like. The whole "turn life's lemons into lemonade" concept. Each song has the feeling of rebuilding, persevering, and sometimes even, celebrating. Most of the songs are 10 minutes or longer since I prefer to get lost in the groove and let it really soak deeply into my consciousness. They are all very beat and bass focused, coming in around 132 to 144 bpm. They dont fit into any specific genre since they combine multiple styles, which was one of the reasons I enjoyed making this so much. No one took Peter Murphy or the Sisters of Mercy material and then made danceable tracks out of it. The visual I always used was of medieval castles and dark, star-lit nights, with people hoppin to an intense beat. Some (most?) dance music is bright and happy, this is more dark, artsy, and intense. Track one opens with a fierce thunderstorm and ancient church bells, as dark minor chord cello basslines and Gregorian chant begin to flow in and out. Crows call out and wolves howl at the full moon in the background as the beats and various basslines intersperse. Towards the middle you will hear an Irish fiddle loop. Someone once told me it sounded like the soundtrack to a movie montage.

The Industrial GrungeRave series is at about 144 bpm and focuses on making the beats harder (industrial), basslines grittier and dirtier (grunge) than your average electronica dance track (rave). Thus, the series name!

Part I Opens with Jabba the Huttâs eerie laugh and has the most pure guitar loops of any of the 3 parts.

Part II is the smoothest and actually uses a piano loop in the middle that I twisted into something that worked. If you listen carefully youâll hear a searing, gritty bassline that runs almost the length of the track and lies under everything. It's my bassline ode to the Lords of Acid. Gotta make a full track with that sound eventually.

Part III is by far the most standard club-mix style of the series. A hottie sings and talks at various points, inspired by the Lords of Acidâs âI Sit on Acidâ (my favorite rave song of all time and the inspiration for most of my work). I added a BB King clip of him talking to a stadium to begin the song. If youâre looking for a club style mix, this is the one.

The RaveCave series is exactly as you would expect. Itâs dark basslines and beats, heavily reverbed. This is the sound that feels likes I've be sent back to 12th century Europe, sitting on top of a horse and wearing chainmail armor while shouting âThey may take our lives . . . " from Braveheart, or, as in Part II wearing barely a loincloth and shouting, "Spartans! . . . " from Spartacus. Sometimes Iâm not sure it isnt an âouter spaceyâ sound either depending on how highly pitched the drums get.

Part I Has three main âmovementsâ if you will. Each a distinct beat. The basslines are panned to alternate back and forth, so if you use headphones it gets kinda wild. I hate to say one song is better than another, but if I had to pick a favorite, this would be it. (shhhhh! dont let the other songs hear that, okay?!)

Part II opens with the famous movie quote, âSpartans! Prepare for GLORY!!!!â It is the most bouncy, almost funky, of the series. Youâll never guess who make cameos, not only Chris Farley, âwell la de FRICKEN da!â and Beavis, âI think it sucks!â Theyâre there for moral support.

Part III Is the smoothest one with the shakers being featured and the basslines and beats not as prominent. Also, the leads get some attention here as well as I generally dont prefer them to dominate.

Part IV is the most âGothâ sounding of the series to me. It flows in all directions, I can never get a handle on whether it is moving laterally, vertically, or what. It just oozes in every direction and yet it works.

Part V is the one that sounds like it is in a hurry. It feels the fastest by far, yet, is similar in bpm to the others. The basslines take center stage in this song with few leads. The last two minutes are just a free-for-all of the various loops used.
