Details:
This track comes from the album The Siren.

There are 14 self-penned songs on Jacen's new album The Siren. Some of the tracks have a strong rockabilly flavour whilst others lean towards country. 'Yes, I guess there's a retro theme to it all - but you could say that about some of the more modern artists that I'm drawn to, like Richard Hawley and Paolo Nutini - but I don't see it as an era based thing... Those performers are here and now, and being enjoyed by a wide audience. Their songs that have been written and recorded remembering what a live audience also enjoys : a strong melody, memorable lyrics and musicians who love to play.'

It was Jacen's love of the music by recording artists, such as Elvis Presley, that motivated him to learn to play an instrument, and this in turn motivated him to form a band. 'I always list Elvis as my number one, but I think my influences are far wider, I'm fascinated by the old blues players and how their music evolved, I was inspired to play guitar by musicians such as Scotty Moore and local guitar legend Rick Turner, I love the voices of singers like La Vern Baker and more recently Eddi Reader and Norah Jones, the uniqueness of others such as Johnny Cash and Ray Charles and the sheer energy of Brian Setzer.'

Jacen discovered that live gigs were an invaluable way to develop, and to discover first hand, what an audience is likely to enjoy, dance to and even sing along with. He comments, 'it's rare that you don't learn something from a gig. Music fans - the people and what they enjoy - constantly broaden your horizons.'

But with the seeds of his musical passion growing from a childhood love of 45 RPM vinyl it was inevitable that he would be drawn to the studio. 'Initially I didn't think beyond getting out and gigging but I guess the dream of recording was always in the back of my mind. When I started to write songs it was an additional pull towards the studio. I couldn't choose between gigging and recording now, each feeds the passion for the other.'

In 1999 Jacen visited Memphis and in a once in a lifetime session recorded with Rockabilly Hall of Fame inductees Paul Burlison and Ronnie Smith as well as The Dempseys (from the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line). He has constantly gigged since then and in 2008 he formed Memphis Underground, a rockabilly band with the distinctive double bass and wild guitar sounds that can be heard on original tracks such as Slap Bass and Hot Baby Lover.

The Siren is an album that respects Jacen's musical influences whilst firmly relishing the present. Enjoy!
