PETER SCULTHORPE (b.1929) Track 1 - OVERTURE (1973) OVERTURE for ORGAN was written in 1973 and uses material from the composition LOVE 200 written for Tully and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and performed by them in 1970. Peter Sculthorpe composed LOVE 200 in 1970 and extracted music from the orchestral last movement, LOVE, the extracted music became the Overture for organ composed in 1973. Peter Sculthorpe is Australiaâs best known composer both here and overseas.

ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Track 2 - MIDDAY REVERIE (2005)
MIDDAY REVERIE was written for Solo Mandolin for Michael Hooper who is now a graduate of York University. The music of Midday Reverie is smooth and relaxed and is perfectly realized in this performance on the compact disc by Michael Hooper. The composition is based on a note row and uses many techniques peculiar to the Mandolin. R.A.

ERIC GROSS (b.1926) Track 3 - Cadenza No.III Op.153/3, (1990) for Solo Mandolin.
This cadenza has been extracted and re-arranged from the composerâs large-scale works involving mandolin and other instruments. It provides the performer with an opportunity to display technical virtuosity as well as a high degree of musicianship. It was originally written for Australian Mandolin virtuoso Paul Hooper whose admirable recording of this work has been released on JADE CDs 1031 and 1080. This excellent recording by Michael Hooper continues in the tradition of the Hooper Family and the Sydney Mandolins, who have always performed and recorded this composerâs works with outstanding expertise. MICHAEL SMETANIN (b.1958) Track 4 - ANCIENT MELODIES IN CONVERGING & DIVERGING LINES (2007)
In 1990 Michael Smetanin wrote a composition titled STING for Solo Mandolin which received high praise from music critics. This piece, Ancient Melodies in Converging and Diverging Lines shows Michael Smetaninâs gift for using early melodies in counterpoint with inventive sublety, combining the lines of the melodies with originality and ease. Michael Hooper, on this recording, gives the work a sympathetic and authoritative interpretation. This work was composed for Adrian Hooper and Michael Hooper for the Federation of Australasian Mandolin Ensembles and played by Fiona Ziegler Mandolin at Shore College North Sydney 12/1/2008. R.A.

RAY LEMOND (b. 1956) Tracks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 â JAZZ WAVES (2008)This set of light jazz pieces is inspired by the writerâs seagoing escapades & captures different aspects of life at sea.

5/ Blues 4 a cruise - a simple blues study introducing the pianist to the favoured blues progressions. As with all blues, the player is invited to improvise around the chord changes.

6/ Caribbean Sands - a laid back piece evoking the long golden sunsets often encountered in the Caribbean. This piece is dedicated to Sarah (Sax).

7/ Under the Stars - standing out on deck at midnight, whilst the ship is at sea under a clear night sky, is one of the most romantic times to be at sea.

8/ Bobbinâ around - sometimes itâs just nice to glide though the ocean not going anywhere in particular.

9/ clouds in their eyes - looking up at the night sky on a balmy night in the West Indies, with the moon reflecting its light off the clouds, is another of lifeâs unexpected pleasures. This piece is dedicated to Robert Allworth.

10/ Sizzlinâ Samba - a highly energetic, showy and challenging piece evoking party time on a cruise ship. Lights, dancing and music! This piece is dedicated to Denise Johnson.

ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Track 11 - AUTUMN SKETCHES (2007)
The AUTUMN SKETCHES were written at the request of Adrian Hooper, also the director for the FAME International Mandolin Festival Sydney 2008. This composition is in four movements of varying moods and tempi. The unique sound quality of the Mandolins, Mandolas and Guitars was taken into account when writing for the group of 124 players which also included Bass Guitars and Double Basses. This music was completed in April 2007 which makes them truly Autumn Sketches and composed in the Autumn of the composerâs life.
Sound Engineer - Mathew Magee. This recording is the actual performance at Shore College North Sydney. 12/1/2008 for the Federation of Australasian Mandolin Ensembles 2008. Re-mastering supervised by Adrian Hooper.

ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Tracks 12, 13, 14 and 15

12/ HOWARDâS END was originally written in 1996 and composed on the 1st of June when John Howard had been our Prime Minister for a couple of months. The composition was then titled A Winterâs Day. John Howard excelled in managing a splendid economy, Australia had not seen such prosperity since Sir Robert Menzies. John Howard is now our second longest serving Prime Minister. He not only presided over great economic prosperity but secured our borders and restored dignity and purpose to the Australian people and also helped restore the dignity and independence of the people of East Timor. John Howardâs tenure as Prime Minister ended on the 24th of November 2007. This piece of music is my homage to John Winston Howard who was Prime minster of Australia for almost twelve years.

13/ AUTUMN MISTS is my evocation of the mists often seen in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The gardens and homes look wonderful shrouded in the mists of Autumn.

14/ PRELUDE TO A KISS. This composition is my comment on a beautiful popular song as sung by many popular artists one of which is Johnny Mathis. My music does not copy in any way the music of the popular song, but evokes a similar atmosphere and mood.

15/ PROMISE OF RAIN uses the title of a book written by Australian author Gail Morgan. Promise of Rain is a rich blend of reminiscence and discovery, disillusionment and hope. This wonderfully perceptive novel moves from childhood to adulthood, city to outback, to evoke the life of a young woman growing up in postwar Australia. Gail Morgan was born in Australia in 1953 and educated at the University of Sydney where she obtained the degree of Master of Arts in English. My music evokes the atmosphere and mood of the book Promise of Rain. R.A.

ANN CARR-BOYD (b.1938) Track 16 âMANDOLIN MUSICâ (1981)
Mandolin Music was commissioned by Adrian Hooper for the Sydney Mandolins in 1981. The music begins with a slow theme which develops into a ternary finale, a fast section which is followed by a slower section and then ends with the fast section repeated. Ann Carr-Boyd is one of Australiaâs well known composers. Ann Carr-Boyd is active in composing music for new commissions many of which are being completed for her 70th birthday this year 2008. R.A.

17/ DEREK STRAHAN (b.1935) - âVARIATIONS ON A THEME FOR THE SUNâ for Solo Piano (1992) â Derek Strahan - piano
These Variations are from a set contained in Pt. 1 of Atlantis Variations for Solo Piano, one of several works written to develop material for inclusion in a proposed cycle of 4 operas suggested by Platoâs account of the rise and fall of Atlantis. The opening theme comprises a sequence of bitonal chords each comprising 2 triads of different tonality. This sequence and the variations based upon it are the result of a search to find the means to portray phenomena associated with the sun â intense radiant heat, solar flares, extreme brightness. The section ends with a mirror inversion of the chord sequence. Intended as a concert piece, Atlantis Variations explores ways of developing ideas intended ultimately for use as leitmotifs in the Atlantis opera cycle. D.W.S.
