Notes on the songs:

The album opens with "Tell Me Ma". This traditional Irish folk song was a hit for Sham Rock in 1998. The fiddle solo in the middle is an 18th century Scots piece called "The East Neuk of Fife". Vocals are by Helen Raw.

"What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor" is a sea shanty which was originally sung by sailors when hoisting the rigging. Verses would be ad-libbed for as long as the process took, with all sorts of unsavoury things being inflicted on the unfortunate man. It has been covered by artists as diverse as the Singing Kettle and Shostakovich, and can often be heard on the soundtrack of SpongeBob Squarepants. The middle section is a Scottish fiddle tune called "Johnnie Cope". Vocals are by Douglas Milne.

"Oranges And Lemons" recounts the various trades that took place within the sound of the church bells of London. The second verse becomes more macabre, as the bells recount the bullying and eventual execution of a debtor. Vocals are by Helen.

"Ding Dong Bell" dates back to around 1580. Vocals are by Douglas.

"Goosey Goosey Gander" is another old song, and is about the Dissolution of the Monasteries are the persecution of Catholics by Henry VIII in the 1540s. Many priests went into hiding. If discovered, the Priest and those hiding them were executed, so "Priest Holes" - small hidden rooms - were constructed within sympathetic houses. The rhyme implies that a search of a house is taking place (where shall I wander? Upstairs and downstairs and in my lady's chamber) and a priest is found (There I met an old man). The priest refuses to say his prayers in English - Catholic prayers were in Latin (who wouldn't say his prayers) - so he is punished. (I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs). Vocals by Helen.

"Incy Wincy Spider" tells the tale of a spider who keeps trying despite the setbacks that life inflicts upon him. It dates back to the early 20th century. Vocals by Douglas (in the style of Davy Jones from The Monkees!).

"Polly Put The Kettle On" is known to date back to the 1780's. The tune is a traditional Scots tune called "Jenny's Bawbee" (a bawbee being a Scots word for a penny). Vocals are by Helen.

"I Had A Little Nut Tree" is about the visit of Juana of Castile, the mad King of Spain's daughter, to the court of Henry VII in 1506. The arrangement attempts to copy a medieval style and features bells, fiddles and a recorder. Vocals are by Douglas.

"Did You Ever See A Lassie?" is sung by Helen. It is a 19th century American song (not Scottish as might be implied by the word "Lassie"). The song is set to a traditional 17th century German tune called "Oh du lieber Augustin".

"I Hear Thunder" is a round sung by Helen and Douglas.

"In An English Country Garden" is an English folk song. It's a standing joke amongst English Folk singers that no two versions of a song have the same words. Vocals are by Helen.

"Baa Baa Black Sheep" is often thought to refer to the medieval 'Great' or 'Old Custom' export tax of 6s 8d per sack (actually around 5) that was imposed on wool by King Edward I in 1275 to fund his 8th and 9th crusades, and which lasted until the fifteenth century. The original words of the final lines were "Two for the master, one for the dame, but none for the little boy who lives down the lane". The song is a bitter reflection on how brutal life was for the working classes. Two bags for the master (the crown), one for the dame (the church and the nobility) and none for the little boy (the working man whose efforts produced the wool). Vocals are by Helen.

"Widdecombe Fair" is an English folk song which tells the real life story of a group of men from the village of Spreyton, in Devon, England, who borrow a horse to travel to Widdecombe Fair at some point in the mid-nineteenth century. Vocals are by Douglas.

"Ride A Cock Horse" is sung by Helen. The identity of the lady in the song is unknown. In some versions she is old, in others she rides a black horse.

"Girls And Boys Come Out To Play" is thought to date back to the 17th century. Children were expected to work, and the only chance they would have had to play with each other was to sneak out at night. Vocals are by Douglas.

"See Saw Marjory Daw" is sung by Helen. A Daw was an old English word for a lazy person. In Scots, it refers specifically to a lazy woman. Johnny was perhaps looking for a new master because his current on could not be bothered to pay him.

"The Grand Old Duke Of York / The King of France" is a medley of two rhymes which are thematically related, and which may or may not share a common history. The fourth verse of "The King Of France" ("The Knave of France" etc) was added by Douglas. Vocals are by Helen and Douglas.

"The Water Is Wide" is an old Scots folk song, sometimes known as "O Waly Waly". It is sung by Helen.

"Cockles and Mussels" is a traditional Irish folk song. It is sung by Douglas.

"Dona Nobis Pacem" is a religious round. It is in Latin, and translates as "Give us noble peace", or as John Lennon would have it, "Give Peace A Chance". All of the vocals are by Douglas.
