Details:
Hello,

I'd like to introduce my musical work to you. It's called Majestic Space Dragon.

The dazzling dragon on the cover, presented circus-wise by a pair of accomplished wizards, is my own creation as well. Though he is the possessor of a mouth full of rather cruel looking teeth, I assure you that his singular aim is not to shred flesh, but to shred musical licks. He is a singer, not a biter.

It is difficult to describe one's own creations, so rather than blundering though such a process, I've decided to take a different approach. Below I've included an interview Majestic Space Dragon did with Mr. Art Leach, a music-writer of the highest pedigree, with impressive credentials and a well-deserved reputation for brilliance. Just to be in his presence was stunning. But enough of my introductions: read it and see for yourself.

Warmest regards,
Majestic Space Dragon

P.S. Mr. Leach had the regrettable habit of mispronouncing the name of the project, adding an "S" to "dragon." Please consider that his numerous qualities more than make up for this minor defect.

Art Leach / Majestic Space Dragon â Interview, March 17, 2011

My name is Art Leach, and I do music news, something thatâs getting very big nowadays. When I heard of The Majestic Space Dragons, I just knew I wanted to do news on them. I knew there was a story there.

Naturally I go to lots of music presentations. But I want more than the surface level conversations with musicians, so Iâve got to look like I fit in. Musicians are a stylish group, so when I go to watch them and do news I usually un-tuck my silk shirt and put on a pair of athletic shoes; you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their footwear. My sneakers say, âThis guy knows whatâs going on. Iâm going to give him the real story.â Probably the most effective thing I can do, style-wise, when going into a music news interview is to put on sunglasses and a beret. Itâs the best way to send musicians the message that, âHey, this guyâs one of us.â

Since I do music news, I have to own tons of music. I have a whole box full of music cassettes and music CDs. Some of the CDs are sound effects CDs, but I have lots of music ones too. In fact, Iâve put some of the sound effects into the upcoming news I made to show you just how effective they can be. The Singinâ Chinese Dragon is a music CD, but it also has some sound effects in it, which really made me interested in it. It is definitely the full package. What does it all mean? Well thatâs what youâre about to find outâ¦

When I sat down with The Majestic Space Dragons, I wore the beret and sunglasses to disarm the band and get the real scoop. Now hereâs a recording of our interview.

Leach: So youâre called The Majestic Space Dragons, but thereâs only one of you here. Where is everybody else? I mean, thereâs more than one instrument playing on the album.

MSDs: Youâve made a small error in the name. Itâs just the singular "dragon," and thereâs no definite article at the beginning; the definite article as the first word of band-names is out of fashion at the moment. Having it would be like not wearing a beret at a music presentation: simply ludicrous.
But as to your question, with current electrical technology, artists can put more than one instrument together in a recording. Sometimes artists find that this technology tempts them to put many, many instruments into a song at the same time. There was no one to stop me from doing this, since I was alone. I acted alone and no one else is to blame.

Leach: Wow. What a complicated answer. One thing Iâve found is that band-names always mean something very significant, and very specific. So what does the name mean? Is this an album for dragons?

MSDs: Yes and no. Dragons may enjoy it, though most like medieval music better; moderately progressive dragons often like baroque. The most progressive ones like music that isnât very nice to listen to at all.

Leach: And the name? What message are you sending with the name The Majestic Space Dragons?

MSDs: Well, nowadays a musician can call their work just about anything as long as it doesnât have any bad words in it; thatâs still illegal. [Leach: Right, right...] Some people think that making a name that is very strange will help get peopleâs attention. But others donât think that.

Leach: What in the world are Space Dragons?

MSDs: They are dragons that live their lives in space. They are very different from terrestrial dragons. Many of them are very beautiful, their sleek skin shimmering and glowing with magnificent color and light.

Leach: And youâve seen these dragons?

MSDs: Yes. Thereâs a picture of one on the cover of the album.

Leach: Follow up question: Just exactly what is the connection between the themes of the music CD and space dragons? Tell me very clearly please, and donât leave anything out.

MSDs: The connection is very logical and easy to grasp.

Leach: Wonderfully put! What else are you going to say about the artwork and the cover?

MSDs: Form. Perspective. Seeing the subject again, but as if for the first time. Use of color. Dragons. A spiritual dialogue between creator and viewer. Artwork. Creatures. Drawing. Weird fonts.

Leach: My goodness! You sound just like an artist Iâve heard of. Something else Iâve heard about is the rise of digital music. What would you like to say about that?

MSDs: Mp3âs. Legal and illegal downloading. File sharing. A chicken in every pot and a studio in every home. An increased availability of the means of production. Marxism. An open marketplace. The internet. Fledgling record companies. iPods.

Leach: Holy-moley! Do you have anything else on that question? If so, say it!

MSDs: Blogosphere. A decline in physical products. iPods.

Leach: Goodness! That was surprising. Hey, what are those tones at the end of each song?

MSDs: An idea. Sine waves.

Leach: So now to the real matter: the music. Well⦠whatâs up with it?

MSDs: It is organized sound. I like most of it. I have enjoyed making it.

Leach: What does the music mean, specifically?

MSDs: Contemporary themes for a contemporary, forward-thinking audience. Politics. Relationship-songs. Environmental issues. Rhyming words.

Leach: Iâve noticed that political music is the best kind of music there is. Do you know that, too?

MSDs: Of course. I love political discourse more than anything. Every song on the album is unabashedly political; no one will be able to escape my point of view, no matter how hard they try to.

Leach: Right, right. I understand and agree with everything youâve just said, politically-wise. You sing about science and technology a lot. Are you, like, in love with science and technology or something?

MSDs: iPods. Television sets. Neuroscience. Communications. Advancement. Fuel-efficient vehicles. The gentle glow of a cellular device illuminating the soft curve of a girlâs face in a dark room. Science-fiction. Spaceships. Science as a way of knowing things for sure. Theory and philosophy.

Leach: Incredible. I think you hit the nail right on the head. But then again, you also sing about things that are magic, like religion-beliefs and spiritualisticisms. Do you love that too, or what?

MSDs: Yes, but itâs much more uncertain and unpredictable, and therefore frightening. So I prefer the glow of a cellular device illuminating the soft curve of a girlâs face in a dark room when other things are happening at the same time but she can only gaze at the device, entranced.

Leach: I knew it! Okay, hereâs a fun one: Whatâs your favorite item of clothing?

MSDs: A beret.

Leach: (Laughing) All right, all right⦠weâre having a good time here. No one ever expects this question, and it really draws out the person behind the art: if you could be any item of clothing, what would you be?

MSDs: A beret.

Leach: Incredible! Why a beret?

MSDs: A beret is the coolest item of clothing ever made. Musicians are the coolest human beings on the planet. It just makes sense.

Leach: Ha! Brilliant! Now⦠say something naughty so we can tell you are a real artist who cares for nothing.

MSDs: âIndiscretions.â

Leach: Hey, thatâs how it is, right? Well this has been great. I canât wait to put this on the news. You are fun to talk to about music. One last question before I take my sunglasses off: The album is called The Singinâ Chinese Dragon. Is this a message about fire safety, Chinese-American economic relations, or about those dragon costumes we see in Chinese parades where lots of people get underneath the dragon and it goes up and down?

MSDs: The third one, and a little the second one. But youâre mispronouncing the second word of the title; itâs singinâ. âSinginââ is just slang for âsinging.â Your sunglasses led me to believe you would already have known that type of street-language. But itâs okay.

Leach: Profound. Nice to do news on you, The Majestic Space Dragons.
