PKP

The band: James Patla, vocals and guitar; Chase McCullough, guitar and vocals; Jonathan Ruccio, bass; Andy Toerper, drums. Formerly known as Pete Killed Pete. As Patla explains the name change, "I think we just really wanted to get away from the whole 'Killed' aspect of the name."

Together since: 2002. At one point, they boasted a three-guitar army, but the third guitarist got married and quit.

The sound: The heavier side of commercial-alternative. The band describes its sound on MySpace as "Take two guitars from Zwan, give them to the technical creations of the power rock band Thrice, and finally some gritty vocal stylings of Strung Out, you get PKP. And PKP is rock!"

The CD: Recorded by Mike Polimadei who also released it on Hometown Records, "Sleepless" boasts chunky, metallic guitars and airplay-compatible pop hooks. First single "Social Trends" has the feel of a breakthrough hit. It's that infectious. As to how the band approached recording, Patla says, "We wanted it to be almost like a live album. We recorded all the guitars in one room to try to keep it real live and real gritty. Being an alternative rock band, we weren't trying to break any molds or anything."

How the live show compares to the record: "We model our live show on the album," Patla says. "After we recorded the album, we went in and changed all the settings on our amps so it wouldn't be far off at all. And recently, we've been playing all the songs in almost the same order as the album, just to keep it consistent."
