Details:
"Lose with its theme of sin as salvation and its outlaw country sounds, will not make it on to mainstream country media but it could. This is Steve Earle, Corb Lund, Johnny Cash, maybe even some Tom Petty territory. The characters on Lose are all losers who win at life, winners because they are true even if it is only to vice. While folks cower nine to nine for The Man paying off student loans, teased with empty promises of a pension, these Lose kats go their own way. With confidence, without complaint, simply doing and swinging while they do. Mellor has taken alt-lit's anti-hero and canonized him, a saint with a silver snap in his step." - Will McGuirk, Oshawa This Week
"His songs weave dark yet upbeat tales of profound loss, stretched like taffy into fantastical stories made real by sure-footed rhythms and strong, thoughtful vocals. Yes, Lee Mellor just might be Canadaâs most underrated songwriter. After the critical acclaim received for his debut album Ghost Town Heart in 2007, Mellor was disheartened when financial success didnât follow. After an injury that left him experiencing chronic pain and a whole lot of personal introspection, Mellor decided there was nothing left to lose, and that his next album would be for himself. âI really had made it,â he says over the phone between rehearsals. âI just had to shed the societal notions of success in order to fully realize it.â
Lyrically, itâs difficult to tell whose boots heâs filling so successfully when there are so many greats whose names come to mind: Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, Richie Havens and modern-day master Ray Lamontagne to start, but the list continues. At the same time, he cuts his own swath across musical boundaries, embracing whatever comes out when heâs writing a song.
âThereâs some country there, for sure,â he says. âBut thereâs also soul, psychedelia and a whole lot of other influences going on...â Mellorâs music is at once a familiar friend, somehow comforting despite the sadness of the stories. While the untrained ear might lump it into the country category â or worse, alt-country (what does that even mean?!) â there is a trippy edge to it; a surreal glitch that gets you good and doesnât let let go." - Jessie Davis, Canada Arts Connect
