Details:
Ayla Stackhouse was blessed with an apropos name because this talented teen is âstackedâ with talent. The Detroit-native is a natural-born singing sensation fortified with operatic training, jazz chops, budding capabilities on three instruments (classical piano, guitar and clarinet) and a passion for writing her own songs. Though her schooling has been in loftier realms of music, Ayla is determined to craft a pop album that connects to kids her age. All of this and much more is evident in the music of her debut CD, produced by multi-faceted Motown veteran Michael B. Sutton.
âEver since I was little Iâve been watching Disney Channel,â Ayla (pronounced âAy-Luh) says with a laugh. âI love opera and my father â whoâs also a singer â taught me jazz, but I donât want to sing just that music for the rest of my life. My musical lane will be something like Pop-Rock-R&B-Alternativeâ¦a list of styles all mushed together!â
The centerpiece of the collection is Aylaâsâ debut single âSomebody Who Loves Me,â inspired after she read the book âThe Last Songâ - a novel written expressly for Miley Cyrus to bring to the big screen. âItâs a story about a dark âemoâ girl whose father taught her to be this amazing pianist, but when her parents split up, she decides she never wants to play againâ¦until she meets a boy who changes everything for her. Then she breaks through and blossoms.â
Ayla also wrote Falling,â a wistful and blissful delight in ¾ waltz time that sweetly reflects the feelings of a young girl experiencing the magic of love for the first time. Ayla composed the song on her signature pink guitar. âI wrote âFallingâ in 8th grade with my best friend Kaitlin,â Ayla shares. âI did the music and we worked on the lyrics together. Iâd bring my guitar to school everyday then during recess and lunch Iâd sit on the bench outside, play and try to write songs. I wrote âFallingâ in ¾ because I just love the way it feelsâ¦itâs the Chopin in me.â
Bravely funneling shades of her own life into her artistry, Ayla is in the mature process of overcoming emotional challenges of coming from a broken home. Though divorced, her parents are united in their support of and desire for their daughterâs success. âMy mom taught me everything about fashion and style,â Ayla says, smiling. âSheâs the one who picked out my pink guitar.â Ayla received much encouragement for her gifts and is blossoming into a remarkable young lady in her own right. One would be hard pressed to find anyone who works harder or wants success in the entertainment world more.
Aylaâs first memory of music was seeing the Disney version of âAnnieâ on TV. âI loved it instantly,â she says, âthe music, the singing, the dancingâ¦the whole Broadway, New York vibe. My dad told me about the different girls who had played Annie and I thought, âIâm little, I can singâ¦I can do it, too!ââ Entered in a talent show at age 5, she won First Prize singing a selection form âAnnie.â Overjoyed that their baby girl could sing, Aylaâs parents sacrificed to make sure she received all the training befitting a future superstar.
At The Bates Academy of the Gifted in Detroit, Ayla maintained a GPA of between 3.6. and 4.0 while heavily involved in music, theater, dance and sports (tennis, figure skating, golf and track), preparing her artistically, spiritually, mentally and physically. She attended the summer program âCamp Broadwayâ and the next summer attended Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for advance studies in clarinet. Ayla sang with opera stars Francesco Attesi and Annika Kaschenz in âNight of Italian Starsâ â in Italian.
After Ayla exhausted all of her local learning resources, her parents astutely recognized that in order to continue growing she would have to move to Los Angeles. So at age 12 in 2008, Ayla bravely boarded a Spirit Airlines flight to California for a summer trip that turned into a permanent move. Now living with her Aunt, she got advanced vocal training from Seth Riggs and recording studio experience with Frank âToddyâ Winfrey who enthusiastically took her under his wing to do her first 8-song demo. Sheâs also been getting her auditioning skin thickened with a tryout for âAmericaâs Got Talentâ and made it to the second round of âX Factorâ singing music ranging from âMercyâ by Duffy to the jazz standard âLullaby of Birdlandâ â experiences that made her even more competitive.
In the meantime, Ayla has been making a name for herself with a myriad of performance opportunities including accompanying herself on guitar singing the Gershwin classic âSummertimeâ for a City of Hope Fundraiser, a solo piano recital of Beethovenâs âFur Elise,â an appearance at the JazzJourney Institute in Philadelphia and at AIDS Walk Los Angeles. Aylaâs talent simply knows no limits! Her three primary influences reveal much about the level of artist she is striving to be. âThe first time I saw Michael Jackson, I was amazed by his dancing and singing,â she says in awe. âI love the way he sang âBenâ as a child and the way he sang âSmileâ later in life. Christina Aguilera motivates me because of the way she can belt with such control and still do all those crazy runs in her upper register. And I love Rejina Spektor! Her voice is a little strange but I really like it. Plus she plays piano. She wanted to be a classical pianist, just like me. She does pop but the music she plays is amazing. I listen to her everyday.â
To date, Aylaâs most spectacular performance was sharing the stage with legendary vocal group The Drifters singing Etta Jamesâ âAt Lastâ in the showroom at Eagle Mountain Casino. âMy aunt took me and I was like, âWho are they,â but they escorted me up and the crowd really cheered for me. That was the best âAt Lastâ I ever sang! Iâm never shy on stage. Iâm more shy offstage.â
Now expanding her vocal palette by learning Spanish, learning new ways to compose using the computer software âFinaleâ in piano class, and coming full circle in her âAnnieâ origin performing the role of Grace Farrell in school, Ayla Stackhouse â ever the dedicated perfectionist â is getting closer to her dreams with every passing day. âI used to draw pictures of me on stage with my name in big lights behind me and people screaming in front of me,â Ayla concludes. âI drew that picture over and over again because itâs all I ever wantedâ¦and I want to be doing that for the rest of my life.â
