"the hereafter" was recorded periodically from march 2005 to may 2006 at downtown rehearsal studios in los angeles, john's closet in venice and field recording locations in california & minnesota. it also features audio from los angeles-area AM radio broadcasts.

songs from the album have been popping up in lots of places. "back where i was" (track four) appeared in its entirety during the climactic scene of an emmy-nominated episode of the tv show grey's anatomy. "the end" (track twelve) was featured on NPR's all songs considered/open mic program. "everyone looks different" (track one) will be featured on the show eureka on the sci-fi channel at some point. "musical chairs" (track nine) is the first track on a CD compilation released by the trabant chai lounge in seattle. the album is available at itunes, amazon and right here on cdbaby.

john sings and plays guitar, bass, piano, keyboards & harmonica. andy plays drums, percussion, orchestra bells & waterphone and did the field recording. evan plays electric guitar on 4, 6, 7, 10 & 11. bryan dobbs plays bass on 5, 6 & 10. ryan zwahlen plays oboe on 3, 5 & 8. carter dewberry plays cello on 1 & 6.
