Details:
Growing up in the Portland, Oregon northwest music and art scene, song writing cousins Blair and Fuzz developed their musical writing styles seperately early on. Blair was into New Wave and Pop Dance music. He always loved to sing at parties, karaoke events and even weddings. Fuzz liked Alternative and Hard Rock and had even played bass guitar in a Classic Rock band in the late 80's. When they first joined forces and started writing songs together in 1991, they realized they shared similar interests in 80's-90's pop and 60's-70's psychedelic, with diverse roots in monumental acts ranging from Depeche Mode and Prince to The Beatles and Pink Floyd.
In 1993 they formed the band 'Verla', a six piece act with a "bigger than life" sound similar to that of Stabbing Westward and Creed. In 1995 they released their first album titled 'Verla's Trace', which received rave reviews from local critics. The band played several Portland area venues that were popular in the mid 90's. Satyricon, Key Largo and The Mt. Tabor Theater just to name a few. They even played several out of town shows in places like Eugene, Salem, Hood River and of course Seattle, Washington.
When Verla disbanded in 1998, Blair and Fuzz continued to write material for their new project called 'UnPopular Club'. They then began the task of auditioning new band members, which took the course of a year or so to find really great musicians. In early 2002 they hooked up with Jay Martineau (former drummer of the Baltimore, Maryland band âSpeed McQueenâ) and Shawn DeCarlo (local Portland area guitar player, song writer). Jay and Shawn have helped sculpt the band into the power pop/pop punk act that it is today.
Joy, sadness, humor, and seduction are all samples of the emotion in the lyrical content of UnPopular Club's music. And coupled with the raw intensity of their live performance, the band puts on a show the audience does not soon forget. The UnPopular Club can be found performing at most of the Portland, Oregon area live music venues including The Tonic Lounge, Arnada Cafe, The Twilight Cafe, Ash St. Saloon, The Madhatter Lounge and The Crystal Ballroom. If you like bands like Green Day, Foo Fighters, Third Eye Blind and Queens Of The Stone Age then you are sure to enjoy the UnPopular Club.
