Details:
At the end of the day, it always comes back to how a song resonates within you. Everyoneâs experience of a song, just as of life itself, is different, which is why the greatest songs can be reinterpreted time and again in so many different ways and never lose their magic.

For Jill Player, a New Yorker who has long called Sydney home and who grew up with these wonderful songs and has known and loved those incomparable interpretations by some of the greatest singers who ever lived â Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Sinatra â that have inspired and directed her own musical path throughout her life, she feels she can now say that, in her way, she has found a way to express how these songs uniquely resonate within her.

âI just return to the music and the lyrics,â is how Jill explains it. âStart there, return to there, let it grow and evolve and develop from there.... Yes, push it, pull it, shade it, colour it, blend it together with your very soul, all of that - but it all begins with the music and the lyrics.â

Of course, this is not her journey alone. This recording was inspired by a friendship that is just as unique as the songs themselves. About ten years ago Jill met guitarist Steve Flack and began getting together every Tuesday â a fact that gave this collection its title â to play jazz standards from the Great American Songbook.

âIâd been playing tunes like Misty and Round Midnight, which is going to be on the next CD, myself solo in an instrumental form for years,â Steve recalls. âWe feel very much that it really is a partnership of two instruments coming together,â Jill elaborates. Steve certainly has the chops, having studied for ten years on and off with the late great Ike Isaacs, best known for his work in the 1960s and â70s with Stephane Grappelli, who lived his last years in Sydney. Steve also spent time in New York getting lessons from Bucky Pizzarelli, who replaced Charlie Christian in Benny Goodmanâs band.

As to these songs, so much a part of the fabric of popular jazz history and so completely âownedâ by those greats, Ella and Peggy and the rest, someone once said to Jill that sheâs right to be doing them now, âbecause those songs really need somebody whoâs lived a little.â One listen to Tuesdays and youâll know he was right. But, then, once really is never enough!
