The Egrets were one of the great bands to come out of the hills and marshes of Marin County. Their distinctive styles were almost as recognizable as that other bird band from LA. But they didnât Not Fade Away like many groups; they hadnât been heard from for years.

Paraphrasing remarks at one of the other bird bandâs reunion concerts, the Egrets werenât gone; they were just going to school, keeping their day jobs, doing their hair, cleaning out the garage, changing diapers, driving kids around, and walking the dogs. But they kept on playing, at home, on the road, at music schools, and on nights and weekends. When they werenât too tired. Or eating tofu and organic spinach. Or communing with the cosmos.

They did not follow the usual rock star trajectory. For one thing, all their egos fit in the same room. They werenât playing in altered states, although sometimes there was too much extortion and disdain on the guitars. On occasion they ran out of drummer fuel. Sometimes they felt too compressed or limited. They did get side tracked (not double tracked â see Distractions, opposite). Now theyâre back, on this outstanding collection!
