Hilario Chiriap, Uwishin (shaman) of the Shuar nation in the Amazonian highlands of Ecuador, is an ancestral custodian of the Shuarâs ancient traditions and knowledge in native sciences, arts and medicine. He practices healing with the sacred plants for more then 25 years and travels around the world since 1997. The songs of the Uwishin are essential within this practice.

In many native american cultures a doctor, or pharmacist, a preacher or a spiritual guide, is also warrior, or a judge, a historian, an artist, or a musician, all walk the same path in order to heal and to transmit wisdom about the balance of life. More then 400 different native cultures throughout the Amazon forest have traditional knowledge of the use of powerful medicines from teacherplants such as Ayahuasca, Floripondio and Tobacco. Amoung the Shuar people, this is a through ancestry refined science, traditionally practiced exclusively by the -male or female- Uwishin who master it through many years of intensive training with their elders, in abstenence, diets and solitary retreats in the rainforest.

During medicine ceremonies Hilario sings in prayers to Spirits in seven cosmic directions, under the power of the sacred medicine-plants. This science helps the participants in reconnecting their spirit in a natural order, and lead them to a deep state of conciousness and insight, increasing interior strenghts and vitality as well as emotional and physical cleansing. Singing in a secret dialect of the Shuar language, a â3rd levelâ in spiritual language, the Uwishinâs songs are callings upon Spirits and are therefor carried out by them alone.

On his second album âNatemâ Hilario Chiriap sings ritual songs from his ancestral lineage, using several traditional Shuar instruments: Tumank (musical bow), Kaer (2 string violin) and Shishink (bamboo leaves). It was recorded with and inspired by Natem (Ayahuasca), at different locations between 2008 and 2010. * The songs marked with [*] were recorded during nights in Ayahuasca ceremonies.
