OTAVALO

It was 1990 and I was living in Hollywood with my family on Gramercy St. One day I heard a flute coming out of an apartment on my floor so I knocked on the door. That's how I met Nick LeFleur. Soon there after we put together this octet with these excellent musicians and Nick wrote the horn arrangements. Russel Bizzett and Kim Stone were old friends from Colorado and we worked together in the past. I had a friend at Amigo Studio (Victor Levin) in the valley and my dear old friend Bob Burnham was available to engineer. We played in as many places as I could find all over Los Angeles that would let an octet in. Moving an octet is like moving an elephant. After playing quite a few gigs we had three days to record. The first two days we didn't get anything good but the third day we got Ira Nepus on trombone back and everything clicked. We got ten songs in on that day then some went to Japan and the band never got together again. I don't think this instrumentation ever has been recorded before or since. Flamenco guitar with horns in a jazz setting with rhythm section. Thanks to all the talented people involved, it came out good enough to get nominated for a Grammy.
