Details:
The members of Petty Demons had all spent time playing shows and making records in previous bands (The Widgets, the Delilahs, X Ray Hip, Rob the Carpenter, Marlee MacLeod . . .). They all loved making records, but hated how long the periods in between releases can be. They loved the LP records of their youth, and lamented the apparent loss of the LP "Side". No more coming home from school and putting on Side One of the newest record from Artist Whoever. LP sides freed artists to order the songs on a release in the way the made the most sense in the context of the whole, and to group them by theme or mood. It emphasized the mood and flow of an entire album. Since the CD replaced the LP, it seemed that most artists abandoned these smaller thematic groupings in favor long CDs, where the "best" songs were front-loaded on the CD, and the more experimental, moody, and less-obviously appealing tracks were left for those listeners who stayed on board until the end of the CD. Independent bands often released CDs only every 2 or 3 years, waiting until they had a batch of songs large enough to justify a full-length "album" on CD. Petty Demons wanted to put out records more often, so that listeners would get something new more frequently, and so that the band would have more manageable projects on which to focus. Side A is the first "side" released by Petty Demons. It is a focused, relatively short, six-song CD (and "EP" to some, a "Side" to Petty Demons) that asks the listener for only 20-some-odd minutes of attention. The listener is rewarded with a high quality quotient, and a short wait for the the next Petty Demons project. Songs about the real thoughts of adults, served in healthy portions.
