The title track to âLeaving the White Lineâ is about leaving the old structures and old ways behind. At least thatâs how I understand Andiâs song, and in the making of the record, that one song in a sense made us.

To me, music should do that thing where it grabs you. It should have Voice. Ethereal rock, melodic pop, happy, sad, indie folk--whatever you want to call it, this album is Voiced. It grabs hold and yet, like the ocean, is constantly shifting, never quite attainable. For all of you who liked any of Andiâs previous three albums, this album is even more developedâmusically, lyrically and vocally.

The songs on this album are travel songs. I donât mean that theyâre happy, sing-along, girl-strumming her guitar songs, but travel songs in the sense of a person on the move, metaphorically, from one place to the next.

One of my favorite songs lyrically comes from Big Country (Little Town):

I want to feel alive again,
I want to know who I am,
I want to be driving through big country
with you, with you, with you.

Sometimes the sprinkling of the rain
hurts more than the hurricane.
All these little lies, these lullabies--
why do all your hellos
feel more like goodbyes?

This town has lost its way.

From the very beginning Andi had the vision of a woman moving down a two-lane highway with rain dappling the windshield, slow and unhurried. The woman is smoking a cigarette perhaps, and is driving away from a broken relationship or some deep loss. Whatever the case, sheâs in process, free at last, moving, thinking, feeling, listening to the songs. In this way the album was made, as a travelogue, from beginning to end.
