Details:
CAUFIELD SEZ: Hi, everybody! Who are we? Well, we used to be an acoustic duo called Shed Incorporated. We were like, totally famous! You remember! Then we got a drummer and a bassist, and now... well, there's no easy way to say this: we are THE new classic rock. It's true! I wish I could say Stephen and I (the main songwriters in this four-piece band) grew up listening to new wave music and underground punk music, but we didn't. I grew up in a rural community in upstate New York where I listened to Beggar's Banquet and Let It Bleed over a thousand times. I loved every single Led Zeppelin album (okay, maybe not Coda). I used to know how to play every Bob Dylan song on every album up to and including Nashville Skyline. Are you starting to understand? I hated all those seventies bands like Journey and Boston; they're not classic rock - that was the decadent time, after the rot had set it. And get this - I never heard of the Smiths, Nine Inch Nails, or the Pixies until I was in college. It's true! Oh, I'd heard a few songs by the Ramones, and I'd heard the Sex Pistols, and the Misfits, but X? Joy Division? You've got to be kidding! I like those bands now (hell, I think the Fiery Furnaces and Old Time Relijun are the best things goin' on these days) but they got to my ears a bit late to make any difference in my songwriting. Every band steals with impunity (the good ones, anyway) but we steal from the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix (well, we try), and all those other people you associate with that time period (early sixties to early seventies). We steal every riff off side two of Led Zeppelin III. All those weird John Lennon songs on the White Album, and the Plastic Ono Band record, the primal scream one, we steal. We've looted all the albums Mick Taylor did with the Stones. So what? you say. What about Oasis ripping off the Beatles and those Black Crowes ripping off the Stones? What's the dif, yo? Well, my friends, those poseurs didn't have the good sense to plunder the WHOLE mary ellen like we do - we don't waste our time sacking one band to the exclusion of the rest - we take it ALL, baby! This ain't no tribute band! Yeah! Oh - one more thing: we still use ACOUSTIC guitars! We don't have a lot of solos, really - we're not very "jammy." We're more into the songs (short songs) for their own sake rather than as excuses to play long solos. Stephen and I share the songwriting and singing equally. What else can we tell you? Well, we have lots of harmonies. We sweat buckets. Before I had this realization about the classic rock thing we called ourselves amplified acoustic rawk, and that's still true, just not AS true as the other thing. If you've never seen us live, you should - if we don't knock your dirty little socks off we'll refund your money, unless it's a free show, in which case you get nothing, of course. We have a new (self-titled) album out and another one on the way. So, there you have it! Ah, it feels so good to come clean! See you soon, mothertruckers!
