"Yow. Exactly the kind of record we're a sucker for. A chick singer/songwriter with a rocker's soul that has something to say and knows how to get her point across. Tasty across the board from start to finish. Hart is a triple threat that plays beautifully, sings unangelically, and could make a living as a lo-fi Diane Warren. A great slice of pop as art without the pretensions. Hart is sure to grab you. Debuts like this deserve special attention when they come along. " (Midwest Record Recap, 5/06)
"Not exactly the coffeehouse folk of some female singer-songwriters, Rebecca Hart has some funky styles to showcase on the opening âThe Vibeâ, which brings to mind a cross between Michelle Shocked and Tracy Chapman. It's a rootsy pop feel that is quite decent...What is promising, though, is the slower, somewhat soulful âPlanetsâ that opens with talking about cars being named after planets. Hart likes her folksy moody pop, particularly on the sparse, murky title track, which evolves into a big, rousing, Etheridge-lite rocker. And itâs this little kickstart that makes the ensuing âWishing Hourâ gel much quicker. The sleeper pick has to be the mellow âLast Danceâ, which sounds like a cross between Jewel and k.d. lang. Another little nugget is the soft and dub-flavored âOut of Meâ that brings to mind Natalie Merchant. The record ends with another uplifting pop rock number entitled âBig Fireâ that has a lot of fire in its belly. " - Jason MacNeil, PopMatters.com 9/8/06
"I know itâs a cliché that Rebecca has probably heard all too much, but boy she sure does remind me of Suzanne Vega. But she also has that Tracy Chapman ferocity and tenacity both in her lyrics and the way she sings them. Nicely layered rhythms allow for vocal harmonies to sneak in and stretch out their proverbial arms. âCrash & Strumâ is great AAA that smokes out the differences between jazz rock and pop for a fusion that will be greeted with open arms across the country." (smother.net, 5/06)
"Rebecca Hart has a big voice and plays the hell out of her acoustic guitar. ... Excellent. And it came from New York City." (Doug Treadway, 'Nightflying')
"Smoky and sultry, New York City-bred vocalist/guitarist Rebecca Hart sounds like the love child of Suzanne Vega and Steely Dan. Whether singing about love, politics or art, Hart infuses her subtle yet powerful music with an explicit sense of drama (she was theatrically trained at Brown University) and the occasional power chord - making Crash & Strum a thoroughly satisfying 40 minutes." (Michael Popke, 'Sea of Tranquility')
âRanging from near acoustic to light alt rock, Rebecca Hart's brand of adult contemporary is alive and vigorous (but not bombastic) and dwells neither excessively in the bright, happy land of pop nor too much in the melancholy dregs. ...The music is smooth and always in motion and the kind of thing you'd like to kick back and have drinks to at your local hang-out spot. Good songwriting.â (Upchuck Undergrind, FishcomCollective.net 5/06)
