Details:
On January 31st in the year 2002 the gospel quartet industry lost one of the greatest lead vocalists to ever hold a microphone. At the ripe age of 85 years old, Rev. Percell Perkins transitioned from this life. Perkins stands as one of few quartet singers that has made an indelible mark on three of the industries greatest groups while they were still in their formative years. When you mention The 5 Blind Boys of Mississippi, The 5 Blind Boys of Alabama, and The Swan Silvertones you canât help but mention this powerhouse lead singer.
The recording that you are viewing represents the very last recording made by this Legend on his 85th birthday. The air on that night was filled with electricity as Pastor Perkins ascended the stage at his church The Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Helena Arkansas. Though only a shell of the roof shaking vocal presence he once was, his sincerity oozes throughout every song of this NOW OUT OF PRINT recording. This was Rev. Perkins debut recording for the MARS record label which is now out of business. Perkins revives his classics like âAll Aboardâ, and âIâve Heard The Voiceâ and introduces new material as well. Imagine still writing new music even at 85!!
With hundreds of songs to his credit Rev. Perkins was known throughout his career as what you might call a 1st second lead singer. On any given recording or LIVE concert Perkins was more than able to carry the group to higher heights. Rev. Perkins was a forerunner of the hard lead singing that was characteristic of the Post War Quartet era. In 1946/7 when the Blind Boys of Mississippi stepped into the studios to make their first recording for the Excelsior record label the two lead singers were the great Archie Brownlee & Rev. Percell Perkins. In fact, it is a known fact that the individual that pushed Archie to adopt his now legendary falsetto scream was Rev. Perkins. Here are a few recordings that Perkins can be found leading on.
The Blind Boys of Mississippi
âThe Lord Will make A Wayâ(1947), âSomething Within Meâ, âWill Jesus Be Waitingâ, âOur Fatherâ (1950) , âSong of Praiseâ (1953), âAll Aboardâ (1954), and so many more!!
The Blind Boys of Alabama
âIâve Been Born Againâ & âFix It Jesusâ (1957) w/ Clarence Fountain
Swan Silvertones
âJesus Never Failsâ (1950), âMotherâs Name Lives In My Heartâ (1950), âFather Aloneâ (1951), âGrant It Lordâ (1951), & many more!!
If you are a lover of traditional black gospel music and especially quartet then this CD is for you. There are only a few of these recordings left and once they are gone thatâs it. This product is OUT OF PRINT which literally means you will not find it in stores or even on other Internet websites. Purchase your copy today and own a piece of Gospel Music History!!
