Description:
Political statements made through song & humor
28 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Political
Details:
Since 1986, The Raging Grannies have been promoting global
peace, justice, and social and economic equality by raising
public awareness through song and humor. Dressed in outrageous attention-grabbing Granny garb, they perform their original song parodies whenever and wherever their
message needs to he heard. There are now close to 70 gaggles of Raging Grannies throughout the world.
In early 2006, I put out a call to the Raging Grannies to contribute some of their original works to this "sampler" CD. I soon discovered that getting the Grans
to Stand still long enough to record their songs was like trying to herd cats - it just couldn't be done! But, in the end, 15 very different gaggles from throughout Canada
and the U.S., from British Columbia to Quebec, from San Francisco to Western Massachusetts to South Florida and all
points in between, contributed to this representative sampling. Each gaggle was asked to contribute songs that were uniquely their own, so that each might sing in their own voice. Inevitably, some blending of "ownership" occurred, and whether this was the result of "the folk
process" of faulty Granny memory doesn't matter. What we have here is a phenomenal collection of 28 hard-hitting songs that exemplify the creativity, vitality, audacity,
and wisdom of the Raging Grannies. Included here are songs about the war on Iraq, of course, and songs about civil rights and women's rights, crooked politicians and crooked elections, the environment, growing older and hopefully
wiser, and about our vision of the world that our grandchildren will inherit.
We are deeply grateful to those who wrote these songs, to the women who sing them, to the engineers in recording studios across our continent who brought them to
life, and to all of you who listen - and heed the words of the Raging Grannies!
