Ross McGinnis discovered the steel pan at Humboldt State University in California where he received his BA in Music Performance. While earning his Masters Degree at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Mr. McGinnis was given the opportunity to direct, arrange, record and compose for his own professional steel band. His enthusiasm to grow as a scholar and a musician took Ross on a pilgrimage to Trinidad, West Indies to play in the Panorama Steelband Competition in 1995,1996 and 2001, receiving front row positions during the competitions.
He recently finished three years of his Doctorate at the University of Arizona, where he was supported by the University for his direction of the UA steel band, which at the time was one of the best in Arizona. Ross is currently working on two solo recording projects with a myriad of fine musicians, a video documentary of the Steelpan art form. McGinnis moonlights as a Music Teacher at Los Gatos High School and has performed on stage with Pato Banton, Lou Rawls, Primus, Andy Narrel, The Coasters, Carl Anderson, The Untouchables and many others.
