Review from Ontap Magazine (11/06):

Iâm fairly sure that Rob Hornfeck has no aspirations to be famous; this killer guitar player simply wants to write songs that he and his friends are going to like. If he picks up some fans along the way, then all that much better. This Is Exactly What I Planned is a mash up of styles, all putting Hornfeckâs songwriting and guitar skills on prominent display. In some regards, Hornfeck comes across like an electrified Keller Williams or a more straightforward Les Claypool, with a soulful funk groove permeating throughout most of his music. Likely to appeal to jam band fans, Hornfeck is talented and accomplishes what he set out to do with This Is Exactly What I Planned. Ultimately, it is either for you or it isnâtâthere is likely very little middle ground here.

Rob hereâ¦

Released spring of 2006, âThis is Exactly What I Plannedâ is exactly what I planned: a mixture of styles and instruments that create a new twist on Rock nâ Roll, and a CD that offers a different sound for each track.

Iâve had some congas for a couple years, and Iâve been exploring different patterns on them. One thing thatâs cool is when I find a hip pattern and apply it to an instrument. Check out track 11 for that. I had also discovered the joys of an e-bow for the guitar solo, as well as lay down a ukulele rhythm track.

If you donât know what a hooter sounds like, check out tracks 2, 11, and 12. Itâs actually called a melodica, and itâs kind of like a harmonica. I always get strange looks when I pull this baby out at shows.

Iâm in the 5th year of writing music for my current band, The Rob Hornfeck Enterprise, and I was finally able to figure how to mic a drum kit. Nate Panning gets to lay it down on most of these tunes, and he really gets to go crazy with percussion during track 6. Thereâs about 6 tracks of him making all sorts of bings and bongs, and he even sings!

Track 9 was written in about 5 minutesâ¦pure genius, eh?!?!

I had just picked a lap steel guitar during the recording of this disc, and they laid down the perfect parts to tracks 7 and 8.

I set out to write the ultimate party tune, and track 4 is the result. Put on our acid-wash jeans and tease your hair for this one. Bonus points if you still have a fringe-leather jacket!

Iâm proud of the fact that wherever we perform track 12, the entire room falls silent and has a big smile by the end of the song.

I tackle a lot of styles on this disc, and I ran through quite a few emotions during the making of this: the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and a few emotions that were just plain weird. You'll probably identify with a few, and others you may make you say, "huh?!?!?!".

I hope you enjoy the music!
