Growing up in an ex-communist, so-called âthird worldâ country, TONY got exposed to Hip Hop around the age of 14 and it was a perfect fit. All the ambitions, anger and the simple reality of the life of a teenager in Romania in the 1990s found a perfect expression in Hip Hop music.
A ghetto is a ghetto regardless of the country itâs in, and thatâs the main reason why teenagers like T.O.N.Y. got drawn to the Hip Hop Culture and started developing their own version of it complete with MCs, DJs, B-Boys, Graf Artists and a whole lot of attitude. Rapping was not even an option for the young T.O.N.Y. who took on the name Teddy C. and started performing at any venue that would allow it. It was meant to be.
Although the public in Romania didnât know much about Hip Hop, the radio stations wouldnât play it and record labels didnât want to even hear about it, T.O.N.Y. kept going for years and became part of the pioneering generation in Romania.
At 21, he decided that it was time to understand more about the culture and really become a part of it so he moved to New York. With only a few dollars in his pocket and without any friends or family, he began to discover the birthplace of Hip Hop the hard way, in the streets. This was a chance for T.O.N.Y. to re-discover himself at the same time and after being involved in various endeavors, everything came full circle and he went back to writing, only this time, he overcame the language difference and started writing in English.
The debut album âThe Differenceâ came natural and it is a testament of his journey. A truly one-of-a-kind album, it will take the listener deep into the life of T.O.N.Y. and expose the reality of Hip Hop worldwide like it has never been done before.
T.O.N.Y.âs inspiration comes from his own experiences and situations he has witnessed both in Romania and in New York. He tells a story of the underprivileged, of the struggle and of the problems regular people are still facing these days, although most of them are too often left in the dark. TONY is bringing a breath of fresh air in a Hip Hop world cluttered with stereotypes and copycat artists with very little relevance to the culture as a whole.
Hip Hop has broken another barrier yet.
