Jeff's song notes:
"This was re-mixed & remastered in October, 2010. Some of the original demo tracks were kept, and some were re-recorded in Oct 2010."
"If memory serves, the opening piano chords, and possibly the chorus chords as well, were written sometime in the early-mid 1990's. I really liked the open sparseness of the chords - it reminded me of Peter Gabriel. However, the song sat in that state for another 5-10 years. I wasn't able to build upon it. Everytime I'd revisit it, I'd come up empty...no melody, no song
structure, etc. Sometime during the writing of Simon Apple's "River To The Sea" album, I got the ending part. The end was a definite nod to the Pat Metheny Group, who has been a big inspiration over the years. I always hope I can take something that inspires me and create an entirely 'new inspiration' out of that. The verse melody came a little later. The song was toyed with as a possible Simon Apple song, but it never seemed to come together and 'fit' within the group. Maybe one day it will become a group song, but on the other hand, this might be how the song works best. As a semi-instrumental piece... leaving more to the imagination."
"I like songs open to interpretation. Each person can take out of it whatever they wish. However, my personal vision of this song: The first part is a sort of crying out in desperate solitude of unanswered prayer... a plea, a yearning... and the upbeat ending is answered prayer. Sometimes we may be praying for the wrong things... or sometimes things need to happen in God's time - not our own. The ending is a 'dance of spiritual joy'."
"This has always been one of my favorite songs, even though it took forever to complete. Maybe it wasn't meant to be finished when it was started. Or maybe that's just way too deep, and it's simply a case of a decade-long writer's block!" :-)
Jeff Miller is a founding member of the band, Simon Apple, where he serves as a primary composer, keyboardist, guitarist, and producer. Simon Apple charted several songs in the U.S. Adult Contemporary Top 40. Jeff has performed with Grammy-winning and multi-platinum artists, and has played small intimate venues, 65,000 seat stadiums, and everything in between. Jeff also has several sacred choral songs published worldwide, and has written music for television (NBC, HBO, MTV, etc).
