The London-based, 16-piece, drummer-led Steve Taylor Big Band dazzled the crowds at London Sohoâs premier jazz clubs. Ronnie Scottâs & Spice of Life

The bandâs repertoire consisted of Buddy Rich favorites, some of which were adapted to be original arrangements, plus a few original compositions. As a decent balance of what the audience expected, what any serious musician would approve of, and also what an everyday jazz-listener would appreciate, I was impressed with the set. I also knew I wasnât the only one.

The warm, delighted smiles lit across the faces of every gentleman and lady in the house. Clapping, cheering at the end of every piece, and appropriately after each band member performed their solos, I was awed.

the crowd was extra attentive to the Steve Taylor Big Band.

Josie Frater, the scatting, sassy singer, was a shining star. As a percussionist from one song to the next, stealing the spotlight on the microphone was wonderfully unexpected.

The band showed off their versatility and sensitivity to the genre following up-tempo pieces with slower ones. The moderated feel, coupled with the variation of added jazz vocals and brushes on the snare, created a mood uniquely reposeful.

After relishing in faster, easily arresting favorites, Steve Taylor appropriately kept the audience interested and intrigued. His drumming was skilful. His ride never failed to sing, sweetly, and his orchestration, particularly in slower tempo songs, was creative. He managed some spectacular licks drummers like me could only dream of doing.

Certainly, the drummer in me was satisfied enough not only seeing a drummer so proficient, but one that also took the spotlight leading the big band, as passionately as Buddy Rich did.

The smile on Taylorâs face was always bigger and wider than anyoneâs; because he was enjoying himself first and foremost, and because he was so willing to perform the next piece at full throttle.

There was an unstoppable energy in him. Taylor still confidently displayed his Buddy-esque style, piece after piece. Any drummer-punishing jokes would be silenced.

the bandâs rendition of âWest Side Storyâ was a fitting grand finale. Without a doubt, the Steve Taylor Big Band eXpLoSiOn delivered the London Jazz Festivalsâ most spectacular finale.
