TCG: Tell us something about your musical background and how long you¹ve been playing guitar.
RS: I have been playing Flamenco guitar for over twenty-seven years. I was educated at the monastery of Santa Teresa in Malta, in Fine Art, Art Restoration, Latin and Gregorian Chant. I studied Flamenco guitar inGranada, Spain, under the tutelage of Pepe Habichuela. I have been music director for several spanish dancecompanies until my wife, dancer/choreographer Valeria and I founded Ritmo Flamenco Dance and Music Ensemble in 1996.
TCG: Tell us about your new CD, (for example) the name of it, when and where it was recorded, some information on the way the album was recorded and how it reflects your overall musicianship and guitar style.
RS: This is my most soulful disc to date however, the opening title "Noche Flamenca' starts the album on a note of intensity with the raging compass of the hard driven Bulerias 'Burning Bridges' is a rumba played in the key of the flamenco Taranta which gives this cut a deep arabic flavour. 'Leyena y Sola' (Soleares) is the root of expression in flamenco and encompasses a wide berth of playing styles. 'En Malaga' is a live cut from a recent tablao-style performance with dynamic castanet and violin accompaniment. Scannura has dedicated several pieces to his family members like 'Santuario por Manuel' and 'El Surco' flamenco dancer daughter, Anjelica. The CD "Noche Flamenca" was composedmainly in the summer in Jerez, Spain. It was recorded in an almost "live" manner where myself and the other musicians simply played each piece three times "live" and picked the cut that suited the feeling I was after.
TCG: Tell us something about your favorite electric guitars and/or acoustic guitars and the guitars featured on your latest album, adding in something about your guitar set ups, amps, strings and pedals.
RS: My guitar is a 1929 Domingo Esteso Flamenco Negra. It was provided for me by the company Andalusian Guitars of Spain. The guitar was set up for me by Paco De Lucia, using Savarez Carbon strings. The action on the Fret board and the bridge is set up extremely low to allow fast "picado" runs. The bridge itself is narrower than the average guitar bridge, bringing the strings closer together for attack and speed.
TCG: Can you mention some of your musical influences, favorite guitarists and most influential albums?
RS: Every Flamenco guitarist is a combination of every guitarist he has ever listened to. In my case, Sabicas and Pepe Habichuela were my main earlier influences. As my style developed, I found Paco De Lucia and Vicente Amigo's styles working their way into my music. I also love the music of the British Impressionists like Ralph Von Williams. Their music incorporates violin in a manner to emmulate the human voice. I try to achieve a similar feeling, where my fiddle player replaces a flamenco singer's voice. Two albums that I find irreplacable are Paco De Lucia's "Almoriama" and "Fuente y Caudal."
