Some of today's top jazz musicians are featured on this disc and you won't believe how incredible they are. Credits include Steve Alee on the grand piano, Frank Smith on Bass, Kenny Phelps on drums, and Sandy Williams on guitars. To that, add live strings and brass with solo work by Farrell Vernon on Sax and Larry Powell on trumpet. Recorded at Sweetwater Productions in Fort Wayne, IN. This is one awesome album.
The lead vocals are warm and full of expression. Simply exquisite! If you didn't know better, you would swear that Rhonda just opened her heart and out came these bits of her soul set to music. And then in an act of pure magic, all the musicians came together and spoke as one soul - expressing their deepest emotions to the one who could understand them most - the one who created all human emotions.
The collection includes songs so well known that grandparents and twenty-somethings and everyone in between will all sing along - transported to a place deep in their hearts that feels safe and comfortable.
These songs represent a full complement of human emotion and experience. The knee buckling helpless adoration of "Misty", the slightly mocking "My Funny Valentine", the pure calm and peace of "Lazy Afternoon", the silliness of "Fascinating Rhythm", the power of "Feeling Good", the heartbreak of "Blues in the Night" and "When the Sun Comes Out". This arrangement of the classic "Summertime" is not at all traditional, but very much in keeping with the words - "and the living is easy".... "The Very Thought of You" will draw your heart to your one true love.
The orchestrations written for Rhonda by Chet Chambers are just wonderful. Some impressive writing. The singing is stop you in your tracks beautiful. Be sure and turn up the volume so you can hear every little nuance. The song selections are quintessential smooth jazz. You won't ever want to be without this music.
Oh, and in a side note: a fliver is an old jalopy, specifically a Model T Ford - one that shakes and sputters as it moves down the road. (Just in case you're wondering after you hear "Fascinating Rhythm".)
