It would seem that nowadays some bands spend far too much time cultivating an image and a level of perceived cool. They focus, sadly, on self-importance and what people think of them more than they care about the music they create to send out into the world. St. Josephâs The Ramey Memo is most certainly not one of those bands. Their latest release âForget Itâ is packed with twenty songs brought to life by three souls (Garner Quillon, Tyson Bottoroff and Raye Lynn) who have obviously drank long and deep from the pop culture well. The songs never seem to take anything or themselves seriously. An unwavering love of all things from the outer limits like aliens, time travel, movie references and a tongue in cheek song about bestiality called âI Fâ¦.ked a Goatâ stand front and center on âForget Itâ much like they did on the bandâs topnotch debut â300 Voices at The King Hill Pub.â But, after giving the new record a few listens, I could hear something different about âForget It.â Sure, the songs still sound like Weird Al and Agent Mulder having a chat at a UFO convention while The Melvins bang away in the background but this album is not a joke, there is something deeper to be found here if you just tune in and listen. The Ramey Memo and most importantly âForget Itâ are a serious homage to the power and greatness of 1990âs alternative rock. All the biggies of the era are represented here. Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana all stand front and center in the composition of âForget Itâ and if thatâs where it were to stop, this would be just another nostalgia type record. But it seems, The Memo have delved deeper into the 1990âs grab bag to expand their sound to include the lesser knowns that rocked my stereo in college like Wax, For Squirrels, Superdrag, Failure and Radish. This is where the joy lies. The band is expanding, growing and moving forward. Songs like âThe Ballad of Van Halenâ, âGarnerâs Songâ (with its mention of scoring a Fecal Matter tape⦠music geeks will get that reference straightaway), âMars (on the Rover) and âToecutterâ show the level of musicality that The Ramey Memo is capable of. The bandâs sound has become heavier, more powerful. Every part of this trio is progressing; the guitar work by Bottoroff has grown by leaps and bounds since â300 Voicesâ, Raye Lynn, always a gifted musician, has taken her bass work beyond just holding down the bottom end and Quillonâs drumming now is becoming a shining point of reference in the band. These guys just arenât a band to laugh at when they play their funny songs about gremlins, broken Sega Saturn game consoles or animal husbandry. Yeah, those things are still there, but somewhere along the way The Ramey Memo became one of the best sounding bands in St. Joe. Who knew? With the advancement of their sound (theyâve always been a good live act) and engineer Captain Kiley Bodenhamer doing the mixing and mastering of âForget Itâ the record has a sharpness to it that was lacking on â300 Voicesâ; where â300â was a step in the right direction, âForget Itâ is a quantum leap forward. Iâm ready to see what The Ramey Memo can do next, what galaxy of quirkiness they can take the fans to. Iâve got high hopes for The Ramey Memo. No pressure, guys. No pressure. - Danny R. Phillips
