This collection of early work dates from 1971 through the mid-1980âs. The path traces experimentation with most of the fundamental elements of music: form, instrumental technique, texture, rhythm and narrative structure. The early tape-pieces in particular provide a kind of breakthrough, away from written music into working directly with recorded sound. Starting with these pieces - mostly created and performed in solitude - Lofstrom's palette expands to include many talented collaborators, including violinist Katherine Hughes and harpist Marcia LaBella (who each perform a challenging solo piece) and master improvisers Mark Feldman, Hal Russell and members of the group Fantasie. A fascinating journey of discovery as a young composer finds his voice.
