New Genreage
All music & lyrics ©2010, Dean Huting & Wire City Records
Genreage (âzhon-rij) n. Definition: Encompassing more than just âGenreâ (type of music/art) representing an element of time attached to a type of music, as in an age, era or other significant measure of time.
Used in sentence: A new genreage evolved out of it all, forever changing our way of making and experiencing music.
Iâm Dean Huting, a tortured artist in hiding. I have been playing instruments and dabbling with music since I was a boy back in Waterloo, Iowa. I was a fun loving little kid in the â60s, crazy teenager in the â70s, young fast lane adult in the â80s, hard working-fairly prosperous-fairly confused in the â90s, loving husband & father in the 2000âs, and now in the 2010 decade, ready to bring some powerful, sometimes spiritual, always intriguing, yet definitely different music to you via this insane tool we know as the internet. The project is called âNew Genreageâ.
Band List: River Ryde â78-â81 Waterloo, IA (Classic Rock covers)
The Ginsuâs â81 Waterloo, IA (Classic Rock and New Age covers)
One Way Up â88-â89 St. Paul/Mpls. MN (Rock-n-Blues Originals)
One on One â91-â95 St. Paul/Mpls. MN (Rock-n-Blues Originals)
â95 â Current Re-building, relocating, working, writing, and re-discovering life through my blessed family and friends
My musical influences include: Todd Rundgren, Yes, Chicago, Rush, ELP, Stone Temple Pilots, The Beatles, Jim Croce, Foo Fighters, Frank Zappa, Sam Cooke, Steve Miller, George Harrison, Daryl Hall, Glen Campbell, Carole King, Carly Simon, James Taylor, and all those great mid seventies bands that survived the disco craze and are just too many to mention.
The Music Biz
Prior to the digital age, recording and marketing music was a fairly complicated process that involved lots of cash and heavy backing by record companies. Today, new meaning has been given to the world of music in many ways including the new found ability to record on our desktop computers in the privacy of our own homes. Add to that the ability to build a web-site, set up Pay-pal accounts and actually sell records on line, and the limitations appear to have been removed. Ahhh⦠but wait, now we have angry record companies who canât sell millions of records anymore, tons of people talented or not, flooding the internet with .99 cent songs, and piracy.
My Idol & modern music pioneer, Todd Rundgren is quoted as saying, âThis new system is bound to fail in its current form, solely for the reason that some songs are priceless, some songs are worthless, and some are worth exactly .99 cents.â Todd created this whole concept back in the â90s with âTRIâ, the worldâs first computer marketed interactive music. As the concept evolved, hard line technology improved quicker than anyone could imagine. Toddâs project was basically discarded because he couldnât keep writing programs and/or replacing outdated hardware.
The music industry has basically sat back and watched this monster grow, and is now left with something far less than the age of gold and platinum. Now we are plagued with unknown talent performing stale catalogue music on TV, factory produced pop, and lots of distasteful crap that seems to be made solely to offend. We have been made to believe that this is the new age of music. It doesnât have to be!!
In honor to Todd Rundgrenâs never ending quest for the next big thing, I am launching a project which I hope will re-write the standard for making music. The key component to the new standard is âLoveâ, an often said but not often utilized emotion which without question would help us save ourselves in return for being let in to our lives. The simple answer⦠we need to produce more, and allow more love in our daily lives. Donât get me wrong, this is not the free love concept of the hippie era with group hugs, political correctness, and LSD induced meditation, this is the real deal. This is looking in the eyes of the person you pass on the street with a smile and a nod and an inner feeling of peace that transcends discrimination and hatred. Love is the one emotion touted by all notable profits as the key ingredient to human existence. In all doomsday scenarios including the Bibleâs Revelations, an often overlooked quote always goes something like this⦠âHowever, this doesnât have to come to passâ, meaning that we do not have to let evil take us down. All that we need on this earth has been provided, and will only work if love is used as the bonding agent.
Mark Twain wrote in his memoirs that, âNo major civilization in the history of the world was ever built on love, rather built on wealth and power and all the evils that come with it. Until we can start over with love as our foundation, we are doomed to fail just like all the rest.â I share this observation and challenge us with all of my heart. Our collective power is huge on all fronts, and I donât think any of us realize how much control we actually have. Weâve been divided purposely in order to weaken our spirit and distract us from our strengths. Isnât it peculiar that two completely opposed groups of equal size have evolved out of modern politics with both vehemently angry at each other and so eager to blame each other for the worldâs problems. This phenomenon has us spending all our time at odds. Itâs time to make a stand and stop fighting. Love will endure and fulfill all of our needs. Iâve felt this tugging at my heart for years and have never been able to stop working long enough to do what feels right. This feels right to me, and hopefully a majority of you will agree.
I see music as a component to the aforementioned conundrum, and as a great area for all to practice their own unique inner strength and ability to choose. Stop buying the force fed super-store approach to music. Start surfing the net and your local hang-outs for real people, artists who use love as their cornerstone for writing.
Try listening to âNew Genreageâ. You wonât hear any demonic chanting, or angelic halleluiahs! This is Rock, Alternative, Blues, Soul, Progressive, Pop, etc., born out of a different un-spoiled view. It has long been said that the aforementioned styles of music culminated from evil. I am here to say forget about all of that. My music comes from my heart and the hearts of those I love. I love what mankind could be in the next era. Listen, enjoy, and start looking for other artists like me, many are just waiting to explode. Buy our .99 cent songs and link us to your sites. Resist the urge to burn copies for all your friends; simply give them the web address and tell them why they need to pay for their own.
Finally, for those who see me or my music as a threat or nuisance, I again quote Rundgren, âGo ahead⦠Ignore me!â Eventually, good will triumph; there is no doubt in my mind of that, and wouldnât it be cool if we could collectively make this the point at which it all begins.
