JAZZ: Smooth Jazz, EASY LISTENING: Mood Music
Details:
Philadelphia born, Ron Griffin has always wanted to compose music and now he does it and he does it well. Ron started playing the bass at the age of seventeen and recalls learning a great deal from another Philly bassist Ralph Downs, who was cut out of the James Jamerson mold, Motownâs great bassist. Ron grew to love and copy Jamersonâs
Approach to the bass guitar.âOne of the things that I learned listening to Jamersonâs bass lines was expressions and feels, or should I say feelings he injected into sections of his bass passages that I employ with various instruments in my tunes. An extremely creative guy Ron learned to play
Drums, bass the guitar and keyboards, because he couldnât get guys to show up for his home studio sessions. Ron listened to records featuring Jamerson, Ray Brown, Wes Montgomery to name a few. Griffin tried to do practice excercises but as he says â I always ended up composing some kind of tune instead of practicing. Ron payed close attention to music arrangements andtook to studying just what each instrument was doing. Quincy Jones, Thom Bell, Paul Riser, Freddie Perrin and Isaac Hayes Kept Ronâs ears very busy. Ronâs presently focusing on building an audience for his music reaching more people and having fun doing so.
