BILLY CRAIN BIO
Billy Crain has been a driving force on the Southern Rock and Rock scene for three decades. Practically born with a guitar in his hands, he learned how to play by ear at a very early age. By the age of fifteen he was playing in bands on the club circuit with his older brother, Tommy Crain. Tommy eventually went on to play with the Charlie Daniels Band for fifteen years and. In 1976, Billy began playing with Bobby Whitlock from Derek and the Dominoes. In 1977 Billy got a call from Henry Paul from the band the Outlaws to come join his band. Billy moved to Florida to join the Henry Paul Band and the band inked a deal with Atlantic Records. The band went on to record four albums of which Billy was one of the contributors of the songwriting. The band toured extensively with the Allman Brothers Band, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, The Charlie Daniels Band, Molly Hatchett, ZZ Top, Rossington-Collins, and many others. In 1982 the band broke up and Billy joined the Bellamy Brothers. In 1988, Billy had his first hit record, co-written with David Bellamy called âIâll Give You All My Love Tonightâ, the song went top five on the Billboard charts and garnered Billy a BMI songwriter award. Billy left the Bellamysâ and moved to Nashville in 1988 to pursue a songwriting career. In 1989 he signed a joint venture with GMMI/MCA Music. That year Billy had his first pop hit by the band Poco. The song âCall It Loveâ went to #2 on the Billboard AC charts, #2 on the Billboard AOR chart, and #15 on the Hot 100. It also went #1 in many countries around the world. Billy received his first gold record for this endeavor and received a BMI pop songwriter award and also eventually received a Million Airplay award.
In 1991 Billy signed a co-venture between GMMI Music and Leeds Levy Music. There he hooked up with Canadian Pop Artist Sue Medley and co-wrote for her record. The song âInside Outâ reached top ten on Canadian AOR, CHR and AC charts.
Billy also had a top 40 hit on Restless Heart titled, âBaby Needs New Shoesâ.
In 1993, Billy signed a joint venture between PolyGram Music and GMMI Music. During this period he co-wrote a song titled âLetâer Ripâ that ended up being recorded by the Dixie Chicks on their debut album, eventually going on to sell 13 million units.
In 1997, Billy hooked up with old friend and producer Paul Worley to a joint venture between Paul and Sony ATV Music. During this time he enjoyed cuts by Shana Petrone, Yankee Grey, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Tammy Cochran, James Otto, Dusty Drake, and Joey Martin. Billy had a top ten single with Yankee Grey called âAnother Nine Minutesâ and won a BMI songwriter award. He also co-wrote the Martina McBride hit âItâs My Timeâ and received a BMI award. Billy also coproduced records with Paul Worley for Sony Records and Warner Bros. In 2005, Billy joined the Midas Music Publishing and Recording Company team where he penned songs for their roster. In 2008, he reunited with old friend Henry Paul and joined up with the rock band The Outlaws. They continue to tour and are looking forward to a 2010 release where Billy is a main writer for the record. He continues to live in Nashville with his wife Sandy where he produces, writes, and tours.
