Details:
It is very rare to find an instrumentalist who is not only technically savvy but one who is capable of playing with great depth and joy. Blind Willie Dineen, mainly a saxophonist, breaks out in his debut disc, Born to Horn, turning heads not only with his saxophone playing, but also his trumpet and flute playing. Dineen also wrote 10 out of the 11 tracks on the disc. The jazz listener will hear traces of hard-bop, cool jazz, contemporary jazz and blues bottled with an avant-garde lid. Listeners will enjoy an unforgettable journey that ranges from cartoonish fun on "Blues for Adam & Eve", to haunting melodies in "Blues in 'da Cot". The emotional energy on Dineen's solo in "Patsy" speaks on many levels and the contemporary vibe on "For Certain" adds even more diversity to the already mixed bag. "I've Got News for You", the only cover on the disc, features Dineen's voice and one of his alter-egos, singer Dr. Cambodius Funkalodius, aka "The Rev". The other vocal track, "They Call Me Names", features vocals and lyrics by Dineen's daughter, Cara, and is a self-affirming jazz-folk ballad turned swing. The last track, "Whale Bait" is a collective band improvisation and a welcome celebration of free jazz that feels fitting to end the disc. Everybody will find something they like on this album as it embodies such a wide range of styles and sentiments. Dineen's debut, Born to Horn, is a refeshing original that leaves the listener wanting more.
