Details:
Teaching vocabulary is enormously challenging; every word must be individually encountered, understood, and absorbed. Traditional tools used to teach SAT vocabulary attempt to supplement mind-numbing laundry lists of words and meanings with texts that use the words in context. The problem is that these texts, taken as a whole, send the message that this vocabulary belongs exclusively to pretentious belles lettres, arid academia, pompous punditry, and other rarified worlds to which the vast majority of teens feel no connection whatsoever. Even if the texts explored have content that would presumably be of interest to high-school-aged youth (an essay on hip-hop, for example), the form feels nonetheless dry and remote to them.

Time and again I have watched, largely helpless, as my students fight through their ennui and do the best they can, convinced that the vocabulary has no use for them beyond the SAT itself.

With a rebel yell, the creators of Rock the SAT have grabbed the mic and shouted "Hell, no!â to all that, ripping the SAT lexicon from the clutches of the bland and giving it to the band. The once hoary verbiage is placed squarely in the milieu that is the lifeblood of popular youth cultureârock 'n' rollâand the medium is the message... big time. The vocabulary is used to communicate exactly what rock has always served to expressâthe angst, the yearning, the confusion, the awkwardness, the desperation, and the desire that is adolescence. As if that weren't enough, the boys have figured out a way to slyly associate the new words with familiar ones so as to instruct without the whiff of didacticism. It is a truly profound accomplishment, a groundbreaking creation that I expect will permanently transform SAT vocabulary instruction. Listening to the CD as a musical artifact, as an album, I wondered what could happen if this thing were to catch on and young songwriters began drawing on more sophisticated vocabulary to forge their lyrics. By combining pedagogy with pop music, Rock the SAT may well revolutionize both!
