Charismatic singer/songwriter's folk/jazz originals sang in rich vocals over expressive acoustic guitar
10 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Modern Folk, WORLD: Island
Details:
Not all singer/songwriters are created the same. This one has a law degree from George Washington University, taught writing in a university, wrote a well-reviewed book of short stories, one musical play and music to another play, and gives lectures on trusts and wills. Rod Garcia wouldn't have become a lawyer if he wasn't a musician first. To help support himself through law school, Rod played in pubs in the Washington D.C. area each night. Now, after all these years, as if coming full circle, Rod is at it again. He's been singing his original compositions (and/or reading from his book) and has done it to appreciative audiences in Chicago (Rhythms Cafe), L.A. (Mauro's Italian Restaurant, Bonaventure), Honolulu (the Philippine Consulate), Manila (The MagNet) and in the D.C. area (Savory Cafe, Manila Cafe) This time, most of his proceeds go to charity. In fact, back in February 2005 he organized a concert for Feed The Hungry. Earnings from his most recent concert - -at the Manila Cafe May 14 -- went to a Philippine charity. What people get from his concerts is a mix of Rod's poetry, passages from his book or plays, and a folk-jazz-ballad combination that aims at a more refined sound where words matter. His sampler CD of originals called "I'm Like You" features this sophisticated mix, with a couple of Tagalog songs for good measure.
