Blessed be the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, from whom all blessings flow. This CD is undoubtedly one of Ronnie Jâs best projects to date. Born Ronald Cameron in the South American country of Guyana and named after his father, who was also a singer, Ronnie started singing at age three and was writing short poems and songs from the tender age of six. By age ten he was winning top prizes on the countryâs radio program, âOn show young Guyanaâ. According to Ronnie, his dad, his best friend and mentor, taught him the importance of listening to the intricacies of music arrangements and the part each instrument play in the overall recording process. It was this early training that enabled J, as he is sometimes called, to develop the art of producing music( he confesses to never having any formal music training). Ronnieâs early influences include, Nat âkingâ Cole, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughn, Quincy Jones, Henri Mancini, Donny Hathaway, the sound of MFSB and Mantovani.
At age sixteen he received a revelation in a dream that one day he would go to a far away place and make music praising God; this he told only to his mom and dad. In 1981 Ronnie landed a job as a sound engineer at then Guyana Broadcasting Corporation and it was there that his mixing abilities came into focus, being requested by all the top disc jockeys as a working partner on the stationâs morning and afternoon shows. Ronnie represented his country at several song festivals including "The Caribbean Broadcasting Union Song Festival" and the "Curacao International Song Festival in the mid 80's. In 1987 he left Guyana for Antigua where he worked as a news journalist/disc jockey. As fate would have it, a dangerous news assignment and the threats that came with covering such an assignment caused him to leave Antigua with his family, including his two year old son, for the USA.
In 1996 Ronnie was called to the music ministry and was baptized in the HOLY SPIRIT at the FULL GOSPEL TABERNACLE CHURCH of MEMPHIS, TN. Rev. AL GREEN pastor. During that time he also worked in the health care field and read for the sight impaired at WYPL radio. It was then that he began writing songs praising our lord and savior, out of which came the CDâ BECAUSE HE CARESâ which contained crowd favorites like âHOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGHâ featuring Nigerian born sax player ABRAHAM OGONLADE,â A CHANCE TO SAY GOODBYEâ written for his spiritual mentor and surrogate grandmother(teacher)Phyllis Jordan, "ITS JUST LIKE HEAVEN" and â BECAUSE HE CARESâ, duet with former Salsoul recording artist Raphel Cameron, which tells about our creator,GOD.
Ronnie credits his martial arts teacher the late LIONELL BRUMMELL for teaching him the importance of sound mental discipline as a pre-requiste for travelling along lifeâs pathway. His mom he credits for his early christian foundation and for teaching him the discipline of taking a little and turning it into much; he also credits producers Don Bryant and Paul Brown of Millington TN. for launching his music ministry by doing his first demo for a mere $40.00. Ronnie says, that was one of the best gifts anyone has ever given him. But most of all he thanks his father, who thought him the importance of staying focused in the midst of a storm, working hard to achieve a goal and the long term benefit of proper diet and rest.
Among those who worked on the project are notable producer/multi-instrumentalist Bruce Whitcomb who did sessions as a Bassist with the late sax great Stanley Turrentine; producer and keyboardist Phil Nichols who toured extensively with the Mighty Sparrow, sax genius Arturo Tappin who has toured with such legends as the late Luther Vandross, Anita Baker and Roberta Flack among others; Erwin Edwards (Soflantis) for bringing a smooth jazzy flavor toâ Softly and Tenderlyâ and DJ Andrew Cats for passing through just in time to lay some memorable and spirited lyrics on â NEVER LEAVE ME ALONEâ. Not forgetting background vocalists Reah Thomas of âGodâs Battallion of Prayerâ church in Brooklyn for her work on âBlessed Assuranceâ, College students Coreen Blair and Yolette Hinds for their angelic vocals on âIn My Heart" and âMake Me Your Servant ,Lordâ and Terisita Glover for her work on âWalk This Walkâ and âHis Name Is Holyâ.
Ronnie hopes that this CD helps humanity to develop a deeper relationship with the lord and that love and joy pour out of the heart of all who listen.
Enjoy, sing along and be blessed. Grace and Peace.
