Q&A with Ripp Donn
After hearing three songs from the up and comer Ripp Donn I was thoroughly amazed at the skill level of this vocalist/producer. The thumping beats and spitfire rap flow proved to be exciting as well as very entertaining. This is a short Q&A with the new Hip Hop Reggae wonder.
Q. So how long have you been making music? How did you start out?
A. Well, I actually started making beats for other artists about 1995. Back then I felt some people werenât taking music very seriously so I decided to go about it on my own. I became my own artist.
Q. I really like those beats, and the lyrics too. Who is behind your music? Do you write?
A. Thanks. Yeah, that's my music. I'm glad you said that because I didn't sample much, although I believe sampling is a staple of Hip Hop the whole clearance process can be a drag . I do write all of my lyrics. Most
Guests in my songs usually write their own unless I'm enlisted to help.
Q. Who are your musical influences? Who do you compare yourself to?
A. Growing up there was Bob Marley of course, Peter Tosh and all the old Reggae my parents used to play. Later I got into Hip Hop and was most impressed by Slick Rick, KRS-ONE, Tribe Called Quest and so on. I really don't listen to that many people although I like what Beenie Man, Capleton, Bounty Killer, and Sean Paul have done lately, you know âradioâ. I really look at myself as a unique artist. There may be comparison among people but I really try hard to forge into new territory, itâs called Ragga Hip Hop.
Q. Define Ragga Hip Hop.
A. In a way I see myself as a reggae link from the US to Jamaica. I was born to Jamaican Immigrants in the Chicago area. My only formal musical training was vocal. I tried singing at first, I was OK but I just couldn't sound like Johnny Gill. In the 90's I got into Hip Hop. I was pretty good but I felt that there was still something missing. I had to go back to my own roots for my own sound. Current Dancehall Reggae artists make their music from a reggae point of view. My approach is making Reggae with a Hip Hop point of view.
I really enjoyed the CD. The artistry was truly groundbreaking. This writer would buy a Ripp Donn CD without hesitation, but my advice to Ripp: Get the word out! Get up, Get out, and get something kid! It's yours for the taking!-QM
