A rising star in the orchestral music scene, Walt Ribeiro, has debuted an album written to be performed by an 80 piece orchestra. Amazingly though, this CD was recorded without using any live audio, and the composer does not even own a MIDI keyboard or a microphone. The album, named âI.Iâ, is a 50 minute score consisting of 12 compositions that can stand on their own, but are ultimately part of a whole. The first piece âPreludeâ introduces the melodies of the next 11 compositions, which then gently interweave in and out of each other, even hinting at the compositions in his next album.
Walt produced, mixed, composed, and orchestrated the entire album. âI.Iâ consists of 7 orchestral, 2 piano, and 3 string quartet pieces. When asked of his decision to not have all orchestral pieces âIt would have been ineffective. You need peaks and valleys. It makes the pianos whisper, and the fortissimos roar!â
âI didnât want to polish the recording too much - flaws create realism. I just wanted to keep it simple, powerful, and sounding natural. I felt in an orchestral setting that volume automation or compression would have killed the realism of the instruments. Acoustically, thereâs certain information being created when an attack is strengthened or weakened - anyone will tell you that dynamics make the piece come alive.â
Having started playing guitar at 16, he worked hard on his playing technique, transcribing, and arranging. As his works improved and the technology developed, Walt believed that his vision could become reality. âItâs challenging being an independent musician and wanting people to experience your music and feel for it in the same way you do. I needed a vehicle to let people hear my works.â
Having studied both locally in Camden County and at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, he developed his skills in MIDI orchestration and production. Walt is also an accomplished teacher of over a hundred students â with lessons ranging from orchestration and ear training to guitar and recording techniques. âYou donât know something well enough unless you can teach it to somebody, and thatâs where I learned things the most, was through my students.â
This independent CD is creating an incredible buzz in the greater Philadelphia region for its novelty in music and production techniques. Walt Ribeiro: âThe CDâs success is not due to the music alone. I have a great time doing what I do, and people resonate to that.â
So sit back and listen, for your ear is an incredible instrument. You may even hear melodies from I.II, who knows.
