Details:
The release of Doug Little's CD, "Subtle Differences," solidifies his place as an exciting new voice on the alto saxophone. Synthesizing the sounds of jazz giants from Johnny Hodges to Kenny Garrett, Little possesses a keen rhythmic sense and a clear, pure sound. Performing with his quartet through a repertoire of originals that range from burning Latin numbers to lush ballads, Little plays with ease and confidence. "Melodic... highly intelligent approach to jazz." (Skyway News).

Besides being an elite saxophonist, Little is also an excellent composer. Recently named a finalist for the Bush Artist Fellowhsip, in 1998, Little was the youngest recipient and only jazz artist selected by The American Composers Forum to receive the prestigious McKnight Fellowship. In 1999 he was awarded a State Arts Board Fellowship. His work as a composer and arranger has been influenced by such diverse luminaries as Miles Davis, Eddie Palmieri, Stevie Wonder, and newer artists such as Björk and Dave Douglas. With his music Little strives to communicate a broad spectrum of emotions that can uplift the audience. The listener may experience joy as it bounces from the drums or sorrow as it sounds on the saxophone. His music is the sound of moving, modern jazz.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Little moved to Minneapolis in 1991 and cofounded the successful jazz sextet, The Motion Poets. He has recorded three CDs with that ensemble and has been featured as a soloist on numerous recordings for other groups. Little has toured to major jazz venues and festivals throughout the United States including The Knitting Factory (New York), Blue Room (Kansas City), Cafe 290 (Atlanta), Discover Jazz Festival (Vermont), Hot House (Chicago), The San Jose Jazz Festival (California), and many more. In November, 2001 Little will travel to England to perform at the London International Jazz Festival. As a guest teacher, he has taught master classes from coast to coast including at Oberlin Conservatory, Northern Illinois University, University of Missouri, Drake University, and Amherst College. Since 1996 he has been director of The Motion Poets Summer Jazz Workshop, a program that teaches jazz and small group improvisation skills to aspiring young musicians.
