JULES DEDEAUX: THE GENUINE ARTICLE
Recording artist, Jules Dedeaux, with the able backing of the musicians that comprise his group Jazmin, remains a force on the contemporary music scene.
Known as one of the best tenor saxophone players in the Houston area, Jules has played with such stellar performers as Lou Rawls, O. V. Wright, Redd Foxx, Jonnie Taylor, Milton Hopkins, Barbara âYoull Lose A Good Thingâ Lynn, and opened for the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.
His Story:
While a young airman stationed in Hawaii, Jules Dedeaux walked into a club in Honolulu with his horn under his arm. That star-crossed evening marked the beginning of a musical journey; Que Martin, long-time Lionel Hampton saxophonist and arranger, fronted the house band.
Impressed with the sound of the airman from Mississippi, he took young Dedeaux under his wing. The next two years found him serving double duty; days with the Air Force, nights in the jazz clubs. By the time his hitch was up, the die had been cast. As Jules tells it, âJohn Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly, Grover Washington, Sonny Stitt, gave me a glimpse of where the music could go.â
Jules left the tutelage of Que Martin and returned to the states to put the theory into practice. He landed in Houston, Texas, and was soon playing behind Alber Collins in the house band at Walters Lounge, a legendary blues joint on Lockwood Avenue.
After a stint as a founding member of the Romancers, Incorporated (later known as the Ghetto Sounds), Jules formed his seminal group: Dedeaux & The Mustangs. He also performed for several years with Sonny Franklins Big Band.
Jules began recording in 1986, producing songs such as âAt Her Easeâ and âJeraldineâ. Far from a museum peice, Jules Dedeauxs playing remains on the cutting edge of the music scene, incorporating elements of blues and fusion while pushing the limits of the jazz universe.
Jules Dedeaux has fashioned a storied career through a variety of venues, with the commom denominator always the sweet sound of that tenor sax.
