POP: Power Pop, ROCK: Hard Rock
Details:
As an independent solo artist, Derek Melo is widely acknowledged as a gifted songwriter and musician. After years of creating music and collaborating with various musicians, he always returns to songwriting and his passion for creating music with the belief of no gimmicks or fillers.
In July 2005, Derek went into studio to record a demo album in collaboration with friend and fellow musician Albe. After entering âCanadian Radio Star National Songwriters Contestâ through a local radio station in Montreal, âMix96â, his song âYouâre Up Thereâ was chosen as Regional Winner. Derek traveled to Toronto to perform live and compete with 11 Regional winners at the National Championships. Although he didnât win, âBeing on stage with Andy Kim (Honey, Honey) and sitting in a room in front of guys like Christopher Ward (Black Velvet) and have them give you advice on songwriting is pricelessâ.
To record the remaining songs that would complete his debut album, Derek went back into studio with Albe. âBringing together the same group of guys to get the same vibe that was created on the previous recording was essentialâ. With the release of his debut album âFlirting with Formalitiesâ, Derek has penned some of his most personal songs yet, including âDreaming Out Loudâ, âFlirting With Formalitiesâ and âHere I Amâ (which was added on as a Bonus track)
Born and raised in Montreal, he quickly found himself passionate about the arts. Enrolling himself in music and drama classes throughout much of high school. Performing in a few theatre productions (including at Place-Des-Arts), he acknowledges that âAlthough theatre is great, nothing can beat the sincerity and honesty of writing, creating and performing my own musicâ.
âWith the forthcoming release of âFlirting with Formalitiesâ Derek begins a new chapter in his musical journey and promises that with this album, âIts time everyone sees the world through my eyesâ. Never one for taking the conventional route, he always keeps two things in mind, âDonât be afraid to question and thereâs more than one way up the mountain.â
