The word yorubeat is derived from the Yoruba people of Nigeria. The traditional music of the Yorubas, the talking drums, African percussion, waka, Fuji, Apala and juju are mixed with western music styles such as pop, jazz, funk, and classical music.

Tunday Akintan became fascinated by music from an early age. His interest in music got started by attending the All Saint Anglican Church in Lagos, Nigeria. At the ages of nine he started visiting Fela Kutiâs band rehearsals in Kalakuta Republic. Few years after Akintanâs father sent him to London to study accountancy, however, Akintansâs passion for music got in the way and he decided to dedicate himself and his future studies on music. In 2002 Akintan collaborated with London-based musicians to create the style of music, which he called the âyorubeat musicâ - a fusion of many different Nigerian and western music styles, where James Brown meets Fela Kuti. Akintan started to develop his music with a twelve-piece band and went on touring round the United Kingdomâs top venues. They later released their first DVD Genesis of Yorubeat Live in London on 12 February 2007. Mind the Gap was inspired by London underground station..
