Tony Washington (vocals/leader) is a man born into gospel music. He has given his life to the art form and this, Tony & Company, is his personal statement. "A New Beginning" was recorded in March, 1992 at Heart Studio, one of Charleston's first home recording studios (in an old house on Calhoun Street downtown...now gone). Tracked in only several days, the young band (Jerome Griffin, bass/musical director; LaMont Garner, drums; Dar'rell Ravenel, keyboards; Bobby Simmons, guitar...everyone sings) is straight out of the church and plays and sings with absolute conviction. A few European tours followed and the band today still goes 'across the pond' on special occasions. Jerome Griffin and LaMont Garner also went on to become members of the Shrimp City Slim and Wanda Johnson bands. All told, this is an early statement by a very talented group of important Lowcountry musicians.
