âAnd the day came that the risk it took to remain tightly wound in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to bloom.â Anais Nin
As her very personal musical memoir pens, âIâd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who Iâm notâ, Tiana is a singer, songwriter, pianist, visionary, businesswoman and idealist whose story, while neither crafted out of a fairytale nor as disturbingly touching as a Lifetime movie, is one of inspiration and hope for the dogged dreamers of today. Her music is a feast for the ears with an eclectic array of sounds dabbling in Pop, R&B, Rock, Jazz and a sprinkling of Contemporary-like grooves.
SONG BIOâS - uncover the hidden meanings and inspiration behind each song......
1. Teaser
The role of playing the nice, good girl, while possibly satisfying in daily life, can grow tiresome. I believe a little playful objectification of men can be quite exhilarating for a lady. Itâs the ultimate role reversal from a societal point of view. My hats off to the girls who know what they want and position themselves to get exactly that. The juiciness of being a woman is rich with opportunities to explore all the experiences possible while expressing her essence. Hereâs to unabashed self-expression. After all, isnât all fair in love and war?
2. Shake The Daydream
The human spirit is so awe inspiring to me. In moments, we are such brilliant creatures, creating beautiful satisfaction-filled lives, exuding love, wisdom, strength and creativity yet at times we find ourselves falling into the black hole of victimhood, weakness, fear, doubt, suppression, failure and trance-like laziness. Countless times in my life Iâve been called upon to give advice and countless of othersâ Iâve been the one calling to seek guidance. Pretty much the answers Iâve given and received always seem to be along the same linesâ¦..hence the message behind Shake The Daydream. This is my shoulder-shaking-wake-up-call to myself and I hope it serves you in a similar way.
3. A Puppet For You
Until the creation of this song, I really didnât think of myself as a pop songwriter and consequently didnât take this very seriously when my producer handed me the rough chords to write to. Surprising to us both, this turned out to be the quickest and easiest song we wrote on the entire album. I love the irony of what can happen to a strong, sassy and confident woman who is used to being in control with members of the opposite sex, which I had a blast portraying in âTeaserâ, but once sheâs face to face with her match in love and lust she can become the most eager and passive slave to loveâs whims. The joke is oftentimes on you when it comes to the game of love.
4. If I Died Today
Although our lives donât open up as many magical moments as either of us would like, my brother and I have conversations that touch me deeply. Oftentimes our talks can turn to a very soulful and spiritual place and during a recent phone call we were both present to how blessed our lives are and before he hung up he said, âIf I died today I would be satisfied.â Hence the inspiration for this songâ¦â¦.. I hope its message resonates with you. Carpe diem!
5. Bleed
There are moments in life that take your breath away because of the searing and un-resolvable pain they inflict upon your soul. This song was written as an antidote to those moments. Not to enable or encourage the one in pain to literally justify taking their own life but to let that pained soul know that in the darkest hour, they are not alone. Someone else has experienced unspeakable pain and purged it from their being by way of a song. In the absolute indulging and surrendering to oneâs darkest feelings as I hope can be felt through this song, a seed of healing may sprout.
6. Not One But Half of Two
During the emotional and intimate process of writing this album, a friendship was formed between my producer and I. What started out as an indescribable energetic connection between us, fueled by deep trust and constant communication, gradually morphed into a soul-mate kind of love. Gratitude from every cell of my being doesnât begin to describe my appreciation for encountering the man that makes me whole. Iâm no longer a singular being but half of two, humbled in the face of love.
7. Ode to the Haters
Coming from an upbringing wrought with suppression and judgment, the completion of this album is a rebellious victory for me with this song specifically having quite a cathartic effect. This is not a message intended to be confrontational or accusatory yet thought-provoking and empowering. Judgment, criticism and squelching of othersâ sense of worth are present in our daily interactions in the most insidious to overtly aggressive ways. My belief is the more we each empower and validate our inherent worth as human beings, weâll focus less on hurting each other and more on having our collective light shine brighter. âA candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.â -Proverb
8. Johhny Ray
This is the only song on the album I did not personally pen. When I heard it for the first time, with its intricate layers of musical genius, jazzy attitude and funk fusion, what came to mind was the epic experience this would be to perform live. It reminds me of the song, âRoofâs Gardenâ, sung by an artist I deeply respect, Al Jarreau. I appreciate that, to the unsuspecting ear, this could be perceived as musical chaos, yet listening more closely you might being to discern brilliance. What a thought-provoking metaphor for life itself.
9. Absolute Exposure
During a troubling time in my life I sought the support of a therapist that during our one and only appointment encouraged me to make a picture that would capture the fear and terror I had of moving forward toward my dreams. I needed to somehow acknowledge the pain of my past in order to accomplish the dreams of my future yet at the same time open up vulnerably with trust to the love of the people around me. With a box of Crayolaâs and a blank piece of construction paper, I had my picture complete within minutes. The images on the page reached out to me so much, giving me a visual of my fear, that instantly it helped me access the confidence and sense of safety I needed to move forward in my life. This song is the music that matches that childlike drawing. I now know itâs safe to step off the cliff of the unknownâ¦â¦.I will fly.
10. The Right Time
Sometimes the miracles youâre praying for are right under your nose. They may not arrive in the package youâve anticipated, at the time you are attached to, or in the obvious way you might expect but Iâm beginning to think that these might be little tests presented to us to gauge our sensitivity to our connection to Universal Flow. Our consciousness is calling in serendipitous miracles all the time. Although the circumstances defied the reasonable and the package wasnât an obvious fit by my then standards nor by the expectations of my family and society, Iâm so grateful I opened to the knocks from my soul mate on my lifeâs door.
11. If Maybe
Reviewing the autopsy of failed relationships is one of lifeâs more sobering experiences. Iâve witnessed so many well-meaning women walk away from relationships in a haze of confusion and make-wrong spinning endlessly in the âwhat ifâsâ of a situation that is out of their control. This is my nod to you.
12. Take a Walk With Me
In moments it feels like Iâm a vulnerable, unguided leaf floating aimlessly down lifeâs river. Iâm just bobbing up and down at the whims of the water, having no say in my destiny and believing that Iâm merely a victim to the elements that surround me. In these moments Iâve forgotten that Iâm equipped with oars that give me the power to have my experience, my life, my destiny go the way I intend. As I look around at the leaves around me in this torrent called life, I would venture to say some of you may have forgotten your power as well. To you I say, come take a walk with meâ¦â¦.
13. The Mirror, the Choice
Spending the first half of my life convincing myself that the box I squirmed inside of to please the standards of those around me became painful as I realized the sale of my soulâs satisfaction was grossly underpriced. My lifeâs map is now to operate with integrity to myself in my commitment to bring unconditional love to others, to remain spiritually grounded, to make a difference on this planet and to be a beacon for inspiration, undauntable expression, wisdom and kindness. To the degree I can love and celebrate myself is the degree with which I can empower the worth of my fellowman.
